Allied Industrial Engineering ENGINEERING Allied Industrial Engineering (AIE) is dedicated to providing top-quality heavy-engineering solutions that improve the efficiency and reliability of industrial operations. AIE general manager Llewellyn Blackler says their approach combines advanced engineering techniques, modern technology, and a focus on customer needs. “By offering superior engineering services, we can help our clients succeed, and operate sustainably,” he says. “We start by carefully analysing what our clients need and implement customised engineering solutions.” Llewellyn says by utilising precision machining, dynamic balancing, fabrication, and fitting services, AIE ensures their solutions are both innovative and practical. “This helps reduce downtime, cut costs, and boost productivity, making AIE a trusted partner for businesses aiming to stay competitive.” AIE serves various sectors, including energy, marine, manufacturing, and pulp and paper. Its services range from machinery refurbishment and repairing ship propulsion equipment to manufacturing and reverse engineering critical components. AIE is committed to innovation, continuously investing in research and development to stay at the forefront of heavy-engineering technology. The company has impressive machinery for handling large projects. It operates both manual and CNC centre lathes with a maximum job weight capacity of 30 tonnes and up to 12 metres between centres, as well as a vertical lathe with an 18-tonne table capacity, accommodating workpieces up to 3.3 metres in diameter and 2.1 metres under the tool. Their heavy equipment line-up also features a floor borer, a horizontal borer, and a 5-axis CNC milling machine with a capacity of up to 6.5 metres in length, three metres in width, and 2.5 metres in height. Specialised equipment can be configured to handle jobs up to 60 tonnes, four metres in diameter and 10 metres in length. This equipment is particularly well-suited for the pulp and paper industry, energy and marine sectors, as well as New Zealand’s growing manufacturing sector. Llewellyn emphasises the importance of their equipment: “The size of our engineering equipment and our skilled team is a key element of AIE’s success among the large industries throughout New Zealand and Australia.” Founded in 1994 by Paul Raethel, who is still active in the company, AIE operates out of a 450sqm workshop. The company values workforce development, offering educational opportunities to both current staff and university students. AIE employs six apprentices and provides work experience to university students studying mechanical engineering. This helps bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical application, ensuring a steady supply of skilled workers. “The university students get to translate their theoretical learning into the practicalities of the heavy-engineering sector, which is important to us in a field where skilled workers and engineers can be hard to find,” Llewellyn says. AIE is also deeply involved in the Kawerau community, sponsoring local organisations such as St John Ambulance, Police Managers Guild Trust, Fire & Emergency and various sports clubs. Llewellyn says AIE prides itself on fostering strong relationships with its clients. “Understanding the unique challenges and goals of each client is crucial to delivering effective solutions.” He says this approach has earned AIE a reputation for reliability and excellence, making them a preferred partner for many businesses.
