Business North July 2025

66 | CONTRACTING Drains Unlimited T T Sue Russell The fundamentals remain the same Covering a region from Mangawhai to Dargaville and as far north as Kaeo, Drains Unlimited is equipped for both urban and rural challenges. “New equipment evolves, but the core of our job is still about doing it right the first time.” Led by Derek Hulse, a seasoned drainage technician with a deep commitment to quality workmanship, industry training, and community values, Whangarei-based Drains Unlimited, which was founded nearly 30 years ago, is a trusted name in drainage, wastewater, and sewage infrastructure. Derek’s path into the trade began through an adult apprenticeship, which saw him transitioning from designing and installing irrigation systems to becoming a qualified drainlayer. Since then, he’s built a reputation for reliability and innovation, working closely with developers across the Northland region. His team has contributed to numerous projects, including housing developments, commercial buildings, and a large retirement village in Whangarei where they installed a 45-metre custom-built underground water tank. Derek says business has been somewhat quiet; however, he’s seen a more positive shift recently, signs that funding to support maintenance and development is becoming more accessible. Derek says Drains Unlimited has been in the process of gaining council registration as a preferred operator, a development that would bring further project opportunities their way. While the industry has seen technological advances, particularly in rural sewage treatment systems, Derek believes the fundamentals of good drainlaying remain constant. “New equipment evolves, but the core of our job is still about doing it right the first time,” he says. A key hallmark of the company is its commitment to training and mentorship. Over the years, Derek has guided 13 apprentices, who have gone on to start their own businesses. “Giving back to the trade is important,” he says. “If you’ve been in the game this long, it’s your responsibility to create opportunities for others.” Covering a region from Mangawhai to Dargaville and as far north as Kaeo, the Drains Unlimited team is equipped for both urban and rural challenges. With a strong pipeline of work ahead in 2025, including commercial and residential developments, the outlook is positive, for the company that has garnered a solid reputation in the industry. At its core, Drains Unlimited operates on a family-first culture.
