Work-shopping ways to deal with the practical issues they faced resulted in some of the building’s best features: old sedimentary soils were a deciding factor behind the lightweight timber building on concrete rafts that would float on the poor soils, rather than the heavier, more traditional steel and concrete. Using timber then brings the advantage of low carbon and the connection to natural materials, that are an important part of wellness, explains Chris. “It’s a factor in people’s health and wellbeing called biophilia, and that comes through really strongly in this building – you can smell the timber, it feels warm, and has that visual warmth as well.” Pooled expertise sits behind the high-performing, low-energy building and its innovative way of drawing fresh air into the building to mitigate the dense heat created in the building by computers and people. Combined with the carefully angled vertical fins, which deflect the heat of the sun, the result is a building easily and efficiently kept at a comfortable 19 degrees without a heat pump in sight. The Education Award for the four-storey timber-and-post buildings, connected by a five-storey atrium to come together as one, recognises their inherent beauty as well as their sustainability and functionality. But the AUT Tukutuku project’s success can truly be measured by the sheer number of students now choosing to attend their lectures on campus, and to make extensive use of the communal spaces for the collegial study and socialising that has been proven to improve their health and wellbeing along with their academic results.
