Lammas Overdyck Architects T T Virginia Wright ARCHITECTURE A young architectural practice, Lammas Overdyck Architects, is celebrating its first birthday. Stephen Lammas and Yvette Overdyck had worked together when they overlapped at a previous architectural practice before Stephen left to start out on his own in 2019. Yvette joined him a year ago and their Auckland-based practice was rebranded. “We complement each other’s skill sets and have an extensive combined background of knowledge we can bring to a huge range of projects,” explains Stephen. Whatever the project, Yvette and Stephen have found that they work well together, bouncing ideas off each other, which benefits the resulting design, and ultimately adds value to the project. “We get results a lot faster with two minds nutting it out. It’s a much richer and more meaningful process than if either of us were working alone,” says Stephen. Lammas Overdyck Architects’ projects to date, using this collaborative design approach, have included a high-end coastal retreat in Northland, which is now at the resource consent stage. They worked through a brief that was complicated by the strict consent conditions that come with building on a coastal headland. After some concept refinement work due to an evolving brief and budget control, they are excited by the results, says Yvette. “It treads very lightly on the land, taking inspired cues from its coastal landscape. Pods for living and sleeping scale down the mass, like the breaking of rock formations, allowing landscaping to extend deep between the built form. The hill is sculpted like the actions of the ocean on the foreshore, creating a series of outdoor spaces for all weather conditions to support the rituals of holiday making.” As a practice, Stephen and Yvette are interested in all sorts of projects with clients looking for design-led results, and they are already working on a satisfying mix. These range from a small cabin at Lake Rotoiti, to designing the commercial mixeduse Aotahi Corner in Hamilton’s Aurora subdivision complete with retail, hospitality, a medical centre, and a child-care centre, and Korikori, an exciting 70-home development, also in Hamilton, due for resource consent in July. “We believe that great architecture can really have a positive impact on people’s lives, and it’s incredibly empowering to have a client who’s driving this project to be something special,“ says Yvette. “Architecture can have such a positive impact on enabling a healthy community to thrive,” adds Stephen, which is why Stephen and Yvette have taken care to focus holistically on the community amenity within the development, designing not only clusters of well-considered, beautiful, affordable one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, terraces and townhouses, but including a safe, beautiful green space for everyone to enjoy. Their goal with this project is to bring great architecture to affordable medium-density housing.
