ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN General Architectural Design Ltd Auckland’s General Architectural Design Ltd (GEAR) is a versatile Albany-based architectural design practice working with clients across New Zealand on both residential and commercial projects. Yifan Zhang, owner-operator of GEAR, brings extensive experience to the field of architectural design, including several years in China, where she contributed to multiple award-winning projects. “After arriving in New Zealand, I initially worked for another architectural firm. Three years later, I established my own practice,” she explains. Since founding GEAR four and a half years ago, Ms Zhang has successfully expanded the company into a team of 10 skilled professionals, comprising individuals with academic and professional backgrounds from both China and New Zealand. This cultural and experiential diversity has proven to be a significant asset in New Zealand’s increasingly multicultural market. All members of the GEAR design team hold a minimum of a Bachelor of Architectural Studies, with some possessing Master’s degrees in architectural design. Their experience in the local market ranges from three to 12 years. The team also includes a licensed building practitioner (LBP), a designer. and a registered architect. Together, they are committed to delivering high-quality architectural solutions that are tailored to meet clients’ budgets and unique project requirements. “Our client base ranges anywhere from commercial Chinese investors to Kiwi families building their dream home – and everything in between. We work across a broad range of project types – from commercial developments and apartment complexes to both large-scale and small-scale residential designs,” says Ms Zhang. Over the past four and a half years, GEAR has delivered numerous projects across the Auckland region for both private homeowners and property developers. These projects have spanned from terraced housing developments to standalone residential homes. Beyond Auckland, GEAR provides architectural design services in locations such as Napier, Hastings, Taupō, Christchurch, and Queenstown – effectively serving clients wherever their development aspirations lie. One of the firm’s recent commercial undertakings, located near its Albany office, involves transforming a 2000sqm warehouse into a museum-like exhibition space. “The project will feature large screens and specialised lighting, creating an immersive experience for visitors,” Ms Zhang notes. In Auckland, the team is actively engaged in several residential projects, including apartment developments in the central business district and the suburb of St Heliers. “We have submitted a resource consent application for the St Heliers project, though construction has yet to commence. Design development is ongoing for the other project,” she adds. With robust development projected in the Queenstown region, GEAR is preparing to establish a second office in the southern resort town. “We’re collaborating with a construction partner there that employs around 60 staff. Given the volume of ongoing and upcoming projects in Queenstown, expansion is a natural next step,” explains Ms Zhang. One such Queenstown project includes the design of a church, which will form part of a larger community development. At the core of GEAR’s approach is a complimentary 30-minute consultation offered to all prospective clients. This initial meeting allows clients to understand the practice’s capabilities and design philosophy. “For first-time clients, we present examples of past projects and discuss their specific needs. Should they wish to proceed, we provide a formal quotation,” says Ms Zhang. “We offer professional guidance from the outset to ensure that every project is viable and aligns with the client’s vision before any contracts are signed.” PRECISE SURVEYING RELIABLE SERVICE LAND SURVEYING BUILDING SETOUT SUBDIVISION BOUNDARY MARKING Trusted Surveying Solutions Across Auckland Unit 1A, 25 Airborne Road, Rosedale, Auckland 0632 info@acesurveyor.com
