Nearly two decades of delivering bespoke architectural homes across Auckland has seen Henry Dunham Building carve out a reputation for high-end residential projects that balance craftsmanship, collaboration and painstaking attention to detail. Director Henry Dunham says the business has always focused on architecturally designed homes and renovations where quality and communication are paramount. He founded Henry Dunham Building in 2007 in Milford on Auckland’s North Shore and now offers over 25 years of experience across Australia, the UK, and New Zealand as a carpenter, contract manager and company director. He is an active member of the Registered Master Builders Federation and has even served as a judge for the Master Builders House of the Year Awards. “We take pride in the personal service we offer at Henry Dunham Building, working closely with our clients and their architects from the first contact to the final handover,” says Henry. “For us, building lasting relationships is just as important as building quality homes.” Henry says early engagement with architects and clients is a major part of the company’s approach. “Almost all of our projects come from architects introducing us to clients and we are really big on early engagement. Ideally, architects introduce us to clients early in the drawing process, this means we are forming a project team based on relationship, personality and trust, rather than just a price. T “The other benefit is that the architect can bounce ideas off us as they work through the design process. Early engagement and building a solid Architect, client, builder team is key to delivering a successful project.” One project that highlights the company’s capability is a striking 1200sqm Herne Bay home designed by Architect Mark Wilson from Masonry Design Solutions. Built on a cliffside peninsula, the three-storey residence required a year-long excavation programme and extensive barrier piling to stabilise the cliff edge. The clients had owned an older weatherboard home on the property and wanted to replace it with a contemporary residence suited to entertaining family and friends. The home’s structure is concrete and steel, and the finished home features a cinema, gym, wine cellar, bar and extensive mechanical services infrastructure. A swimming pool cantilevers dramatically over the cliff edge, while a reclaimed lawn area sits atop a cantilevered concrete ground structure. “They were great clients to work with,” says Henry. “They had the same vision as us, everything had to be perfect, and they trusted us to deliver it perfectly.” Henry says the build demonstrated the level of coordination and technical expertise required for complex architectural homes. “Every aspect of the project was challenging — from the excavation and structural engineering through to the finishing details, it demanded precision at every stage,” Henry says. While the company is known for luxury new builds, it also undertakes high-end renovations, including the Grosvenor Street project, an extensive restoration and modernisation of an Edwardian villa dating back to 1910. The renovation was the second project completed for the clients, who had previously worked with Henry on The Oyster Inn hospitality project on Waiheke Island. Working alongside designer Kimberley Read of llewellyn Architecture, the renovation involved reconfiguring internal spaces, relocating windows, installing new flooring and completely updating the kitchen and bathrooms. The owners sourced authentic Edwardian details, including heritage cornices and ceiling roses and tapware. Henry says projects like Grosvenor Street showcase the company’s ability to combine heritage restoration with modern craftsmanship. The company is currently working on two projects in Coatesville, a renovation and a new home build, alongside smaller renovations across the North Shore.
