When Pete Logan returned from his time overseas he was intent on establishing a building company that served his clients meaningfully and that meant offering a meld of architectural, quantity surveying, and building expertise into the mix, right from the get-go. The value of having a round table approach in early discussions, as client visions around budget and buildability begin to be articulated, means that the risk of disappointments is eliminated. “We’re primarily a quantity surveying and building entity who provide architectural capabilities and we’re intent upon avoiding ideas becoming misaligned. This can happen when architects work in isolation from the person who understands the building reality. My background as a builder and project manager means we bring a strong emphasis on the buildability aspect and by having those early conversations with the client, architect and us, costly issues are avoided,” Pete explains. With architects, quantity surveyors and builders under one roof, the design and build experience for clients is seamless. Pete describes it as crafting personalised environments where clients can live authentically. It’s a challenging, compelling profession he thrives on. The focus mainly is on residential extensions in the heritage, bungalow space along with design-and-build of new homes. All work falls within the mid to high-end range. Like many in the sector, Pete had to negotiate the ups and downs that came with the COVID era bubble and burst phenomenon. Holding tight though to the vision of delivering clients an authentic building experience and outcome served him well and kept the business ticking over. “This year is going well and into 2027 the landscape is looking promising. I’d suggest to anyone wanting to have a build in 2027 to make contact soon.” A villa extension is just about to get underway, though work on grounding the design has occupied Pete for the past year. “We’re looking forward to this project with budget and works having remained aligned during the entire process. The final design is absolutely stunning and exactly what the client wanted.” Another huge benefit that derives for clients from the early team interaction in grounding the design is that high-level costings on the project are grounded early on in the piece. “We’ve all heard of the nightmare situation of a budget blowing and especially in the renovation/alteration space — it takes a really robust costing process to bring a sense of certainty around the build value for the clients. We take considerable time early on to ensure the project aligns with the budget reality and our project management skills ensure this remains the case throughout the build.” Pete started his building apprenticeship from school at age 18. Opportunities to develop site management skills presented and his building career quickly evolved into leadership roles on high-end architectural homes in Auckland and Waiheke Island. He discovered he possessed innate project management capabilities which, he says, have served him well throughout his building journey. He acknowledges being a perfectionist and says this commitment to always delivering clients the very best outcomes has guided the company’s success ever since forming. Plans are to continue to grow while remaining true to the company’s founding vision of becoming an industry leader building beautifully crafted award-winning homes. “Since I began building, and then forming Build Unlimited, I haven’t let go of the values that underpin how I approach each and every project that crosses my desk. I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved while staying true to those founding visions and future possibilities are exciting to contemplate.”
