Momentum Building is showcasing the value of thoughtful renovation through a standout transformation of a rural Waikato farmhouse, proving that an existing home can be re-imagined into a high-quality forever residence, without sacrificing the character and location that made it special in the first place. The Cambridge-based company recently completed a major renovation and extension of a 1960s’ red-brick farmhouse on Cambridge Road. Momentum Building director Anthony Paterson says the owners had lived on the dairy farm for more than a decade, and spent several years carefully planning how they wanted the home to function for the long term. “They had done a lot of work around the farm first, and when it came time to focus on the house, they knew exactly what they wanted. This is intended to be their home for the foreseeable future, so every decision was made with longevity and practicality in mind,” Anthony says. Rather than build new elsewhere on the property, the owners chose to renovate the existing farmhouse, which occupies the highest point on the farm and offers sweeping views across the surrounding landscape to Mount Pirongia. The project included a substantial extension that enlarged the main living area, created a more welcoming entrance, and added a large covered outdoor entertaining space designed to maximise the property’s rural outlook. A standout feature is the enclosed concrete patio complete with a large outdoor fireplace and cooking area. Expansive bifold doors open almost the full width of the living area, creating a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors. “The outdoor living space was a major focus,” says Anthony. “When those doors are fully opened you can sit there and look right across the farm and out to the mountain.” The renovation also delivered a dream kitchen featuring timber-look cabinetry, porcelain bench tops and splash backs, double dish drawers, and a generous scullery. Existing spaces throughout the home were reconfigured to better suit the owners’ needs, including converting one bedroom into a dedicated office. Bathrooms were completely redesigned with tiled showers and modern fittings, while the laundry received custom joinery and practical features, including waist-height washing machine and dryer to improve accessibility. Attention to detail extended throughout the property. New brickwork was carefully matched to the original home, while a wraparound deck featuring streamlined vertical balustrades was designed to preserve uninterrupted views of the surrounding countryside. Downstairs, the basement garage area was transformed to include additional storage, a separate toilet, and a dedicated music room complete with stage and lighting for the homeowner’s passion for performing. Anthony says the project demonstrates how careful planning and collaboration can deliver exceptional outcomes. “They were fantastic clients, because they knew what they wanted. We worked closely with them and the designer to make sure every detail achieved the vision they had for the home.” Founded in 2019, Momentum Building specialises in renovations and new homes throughout the Waikato, with a strong reputation for rural construction projects.
