When flooding in Pirongia earlier this year washed out the inlet to Waipa District Council’s treatment plant, leaving Pirongia and large parts of Te Awamutu without water, the Waikato contractor was among the first companies called to help restore supply. This type of rapid-response work sits alongside an increasingly broad workload for the civil infrastructure business, which has steadily expanded its presence across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty during the past decade. Employing about 75 staff, Waipa Civil now operates across Waipa, Hamilton, Taupo, Tauranga, Huntly and the Western Bay of Plenty, specialising in underground infrastructure and three-waters construction. General Manager Daryll Walker says the company’s growth has largely been driven by long-term council infrastructure programmes and increasing demand for specialist underground capability. “We’ve progressively expanded both our workforce and technical capability to keep up with the type of projects councils and contractors need delivered,” Daryll says. Waipa Civil’s work spans open-cut pipeline installation, horizontal directional drilling, pipe bursting, UV pipe relining, micro tunnelling and above-ground fabrication and installation. The company is also involved in subdivision construction and pump station development across water, wastewater and stormwater networks. Much of that workload is tied to infrastructure renewal programmes being undertaken by local authorities throughout the region. Current projects include wastewater and stormwater renewals for Hamilton City Council, water renewals across Hamilton’s network, a large subdivision development on Hautapu Rd, the Collins Rd pump station project in Hamilton, and stormwater installation works at Tauriko as a subcontractor to Downer New Zealand. Alongside traditional pipeline installation, UV relining has become a significant part of the company’s workload, with projects currently being delivered for Waipa District Council, Watercare, Taupo District Council, Western Bay of Plenty District Council and Hamilton City Council. The trenchless side of the business has also continued expanding as councils and developers look for ways to upgrade underground infrastructure while minimising disruption to roads, businesses and residents. “Directional drilling and trenchless technology have become a major part of what we do,” Daryll says. “It gives clients more flexibility when you’re working around existing infrastructure, busy roads or urban environments where you need to reduce disruption as much as possible.”
