T T from page 50 The company has also invested heavily in owning its own equipment, allowing crews to operate across multiple projects simultaneously. Waipa Civil owns specialist drilling, welding, relining and inspection equipment, along with CCTV camera systems used for inspecting and tracing underground lines. That operational capability becomes particularly important during emergency events, where councils often require contractors who can mobilise immediately. The Pirongia water outage earlier this year highlighted the role Waipa Civil increasingly plays during urgent infrastructure failures. After flooding damaged the treatment plant inlet, the company worked alongside council staff to help develop a solution aimed at restoring supply as quickly as possible and limiting disruption for residents. “We have a great bunch of staff that jump at the chance to be part of emergency works,” Daryll says. “Waipa District Council and Hamilton City Council know we’re readily available for emergencies with the staff, resources and capability to respond quickly.” Crews worked late into the evenings and through weekends to complete the work, with many volunteering additional hours to help restore supply to affected communities. While wastewater directives and tighter environmental standards continue shaping infrastructure investment nationwide, Daryll says expectations around compliance and delivery standards have always been high within the sector. Strong working relationships with councils, consultants and subcontractors have also become an important part of delivering projects across multiple districts and live infrastructure environments. “The best way to secure work and build strong client relationships is to share the client’s vision for the project and complete it on time and within budget,” Daryll says. Established in 2012, Waipa Civil has progressively evolved from a Waikato-based civil contractor into a specialised underground infrastructure business delivering projects across a growing network of council and contractor clients. Daryll says the business places strong importance on responsiveness, communication and the willingness of staff to step forward when communities need infrastructure support.
