82 | Build Craft Group JOINERY Combining cabinetry and building The company operates from a manufacturing facility in East Tamaki and works Auckland-wide, T T Karen Phelps Build Craft Group is positioning itself as a specialist in cabinetry and building, combining in-house manufacturing with end-to-end construction services as it expands across Auckland and beyond. Founded in 2023 by owner Sean Chee Hien Soo, the East Tamaki-based company draws on his background in both finance and construction, particularly in estimating, project tendering and delivery. Before establishing the business, Sean spent around a decade working in the building industry, experience he now applies across a growing portfolio of residential and commercial projects. “Build Craft Group was created to bring together strong financial discipline with hands-on building expertise,” Sean says. “That combination helps us understand projects from both a cost and delivery perspective, so clients get clarity from the beginning.” The company operates from a manufacturing facility in East Tamaki and works Auckland-wide, with projects also completed in Tauranga, the Bay of Plenty and Mangawhai. Depending on scope, it can operate nationwide. A key point of difference is its focus on cabinetry, which is delivered entirely in-house. Around 25 BCITO trade-qualified joiners are employed across design, detailing, manufacture and installation, allowing it to maintain control over quality and timelines. “Cabinetry is really at the heart of what we do,” says Sean. “We take pride in the fact that everything is designed, manufactured and installed by our own team. That means we can ensure consistency and a higher level of finish.” Alongside its joinery division, Build Craft Group also employs a small team of builders, and scales up with contractors and subcontractors for larger developments. It has typically handled projects up to the $1 million mark and continues to build capacity as demand increases. Client focus is central to its approach. “We always want to understand exactly what the client needs, and what their budget is, then we work within that to deliver the best possible outcome.” Recent work includes cabinetry for Metlifecare facilities at Ōtau Ridge in Clevedon and Gulf Rise in Silverdale, as well as The Botanic retirement village, also in Silverdale. It has also completed commercial projects, such as KFC outlets in Cavendish Drive and East Tamaki, involving carpentry, foundations and internal joinery. Build Craft Group also delivered all joinery for Cass School in Mt Roskill, including five classroom blocks, an administration building, and a hydro pool facility. The company is currently working on its largest project to date, at Orion Point for Metlifecare, involving joinery for 60 care suites, 42 apartments and shared spaces. Construction began in June and is expected to take around a year. It is also working with the Tāmaki Regeneration Company in Point England on cabinetry for a group- housing development. “We are proud of the scale and variety of projects we are involved in,” says Sean. “Each one pushes us to improve and refine what we do.” Build Craft Group is a member of Master Joiners and holds SiteWise Gold accreditation, reflecting its focus on health, safety and professional standards.
