16 | HOSPITALITY Cordis Hotel Auckland - Our Land Is Alive Offering a unique Kiwi experience from page 14 Cheers! From left, Cordis Hotel Auckland management staff, Volker Marecek, executive chef; Lucas Gougeon, director of food and beverage; Aia Jawad, public relations manager, and Franz Mascarenhas, managing director, celebrate the opening of Our land I s Alive. Lucas says the bar embraces and brings to life the natural resources that have been part of the country for thousands of years, but which are constantly evolving through the passion of the people living in the land. “I am French, so I say this from an exter- nal point of view. New Zealand is such a rich country in terms of natural product and experience. Kiwis are really passionate people and when Kiwis make wine they put all their passion into making it. “We have seen the wines in the ‘80s, ’90s and 2000s grow very strong in quality and become internationally recognised. When Kiwis make beer they make excellent beer, especially craft beer. “Now there is a big emphasis on gin and we are seeing the same for whiskeys, vodkas and rums. Some of our products are made by microbreweries and micro-distilleries that are not easy to find. “On top of that we have our team playing with all these wonderful ingredients and mak- ing cocktails.” Lucas says he recently went on a small road trip to Coromandel and while walking around Thames found a micro-distillery that had just opened. “We are now about to get them in the bar. This happens all the time with people who are about to launch a new product and want to be part of this experience. “We are happy to showcase new local suppliers because we want an extensive list of New Zealand made beverages.” Our Land is Alive’s patrons include locals and in-house guests staying at the hotel or attending events and Lucas says because of its location, size and the unique experience the bar offers a perfect venue for semi private events and functions. “The bar has 94 seats but we can double that number since we have flexibility to move furniture around to accommodate events, large parties or special requirements.” Fountain Drinks Postmix syrups and guns suppliers If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that kiwi’s value local businesses and local businesses value kiwis.
