56 | INDUSYRY Golden Bay Cement - End of Life Tyre Plant Confidence in local contractors The $25 million waste tyre project was part funded by the Ministry for the Environment with a grant of $16 million awarded through its Waste Minimisation Fund. from page 54 “There were some pretty heavy structural modifications required to accept the new equipment, which was done in a very con- trolled and staged manner.” Wherever possible, local contractors and suppliers were used throughout the duration of the upgrade project, which Steve says was testament to GBC’s confidence in what local Northland contractors could deliver. “Many of the contractors are familiar with the plant through on-going maintenance work and we were able to leverage off that site familiarity. “Having a larger project like this to work on allows many of these contractors to take on additional personnel and up-skill existing staff, which strengthens their businesses.” Ground was broken in October 2019 by Northland civil contracting firm United Civil who remained on site for around 15 months. At the same time Whangarei based Culham Engineering & Construction mobilised to com- plete structural modifications and fabrication of the hot disc, which is the centre piece of FLS process equipment. Stainless Steel Projects (SSP) fabricated a number of the larger pieces of equipment for the project, again to FLS’s design. BDX Group, another local company supported us on equipment fabrication and installation. Elec- trical installation was led by Go Electrical, and materials handling equipment was supplied by Conveyor Industries.” Marsden Point based civil structural engi- neering specialists Grit Engineering engaged to provide civil project engineering support and temporary works engineering support during the plant shut down.
