We understand the value of water to sustain people, the environment, and the economy, and we enjoy the challenge of developing solutions that will capture some of the excess water available in winter months, to make it available for communities and the environment in the dry summer months. Well-designed water storage infrastructure will add significant value and greatly improve the resilience of the communities it serves. The stored water will provide security of supply to ensure households don’t run out of water in a drought and will enable water intensive industry and horticulture that will create employment opportunities. The Matawii dam, and others being developed by Te Tai Tokerau Trust will provide significant benefit for many future generations. The environmental enhancement being undertaken will also result in improved biodiversity values in and around the reservoir. The areas identified as being the most suitable for development are near Kaikohe in the Mid North, tight, and on the Northern Pouto Peninsula, south of Dargaville, in the Kaipara.
