Sue Russell A ucklanders, Peter Robinson and Darren Maxwell have brought decades of construction experience together when they established By Design Concrete and Paving. “We started with the two of us and one other full-time staff member and within four years we have grown to a team of thirty-five,” says Peter. Asked what he puts the success of the business down to, Peter says it’s simply about demonstrating a proven track-record of com- pleting contracts on time on budget and to our high standard of craftsmanship. “I think too because of our earlier profes- sional backgrounds in construction and resi- dential projects, a large cohort of people knew about us, so when we got together in this company that really set us on the right track.” By Design Concrete and Paving provides a wide range of services, including paving, concreting, commercial work, pool coping and landscaping. It also specialises in the use of Permeable Concrete The two owners work in complementary ways with Peter as CEO taking care of con- tracts, pricing and over all day to day running of office business. Darren, as Operations Manager has two Project Managers working alongside him who focus on project delivery and customer satisfaction every day. The company’s standard of work has been recognised this year in the Registered Master Landscapers Awards. In the Residential Project $150,000+ By Design Concrete and Paving received a Gold Award for a Herne Bay project; a Silver Award for an Ardmore Pool Project, up to $50,000, and another Silver Award for a residential project in Pukekohe in the $50,000 - $150,000 category. By Design Concrete were super excited and proud to win a Gold on the night for the Herne Bay project. “It’s not every day you get to pour a Firth white pebble concrete driveway. The white pebble concrete used in this dream driveway was the most decorative concrete poured in Auckland. The planning required was very intensive to insure we could meet the client’s brief. We had our most experi- enced craftsmen on the site to deliver a world class driveway. The Firth concrete manu- facturing plant had to be closed down and thoroughly cleaned out before the batch of white concrete was made in it. We had to pur- chase special oxides, white pebbles and white cement. It had to be hand loaded as well and when the job was finished the plant had to be washed out again. Our amazing clients are still smiling every time they drive down their dream driveway.” Peter and Darren also market a special- ised permeable concrete technology called Permcon NZ. The blend of small shaped aggregate, cement and binding agents and the continuous pour process makes the product ideal for driveways, car parks and footpaths, steps and patios. Permcon is also marketed in Australia and America. “It’s becoming very popular with Councils for meeting site coverage requirements as buildings get larger the drive-ways get larger as well.” Demand for the company’s services is full on and with an ever-expanding range of hard-surface products. Peter says the trend to mix and match several forms in the one project creates a really visually appealing landscaping outcome. There’s plenty of work ahead as well, with the teams booked out until the end of Octo- ber, however Peter and the team are always happy to look over plans, provide prices and advise on hardscaping needs.
