This year, the Northland based transportable homes company, based in Kamo, Whangarei, received recognition for its work encouraging and supporting those who may struggle to find gainful employment, when it received the Diversity & Inclusion Award at the Northland Business Excellence Awards. Brett says he’s happy to have received the award, given his working ethos has always been to create employment pathways that bring dignity and a sense of self-worth to his staff. Today, the company employs a team of 12, from entry-level hammer-hands to licensed builders including 3 apprentices. Demand for the prefabricated houses the company builds is running at an all-time high. “Right now I have 19 houses to build and I generally have 6 – 8 on my board at any one time. It’s a very efficient and productive way to build and it means I can pass on real value to our clients.” In its long history Sunshine Homes & Cabins has built 2328 homes of all shapes and sizes from farm cottages to sea-side baches as well as city, town and rural residential homes. While going through Council processes can significantly extend the time it takes for a new home to be delivered, the actual build time is about 8 weeks. And like many companies working within the construction sector, current supply-chain challenges have had some impact. “We’re very fortunate really as our homes are constructed using Durapanel 36mm solid panels, instead of gib and frame.” All homes are built under cover making for good working conditions for staff to build in. “I build dwellings in conjunction with the Trades at North Tech and take students from there for practical experience.” The company is currently working through the Passive House standards as an additional offering to clients. Historically Brett has engaged staff who had been on probation and under the care of probation services.
