The awards’ objectives are to celebrate New Zealand’s excellence in the field of steel construction by identifying projects that demonstrate efficiency, cost effectiveness, application of sustainability principles, aesthetics, best practice, outstanding teamwork, great safety management and innovation. Assessed by an independent panel of judges representing steel construction, building, structural engineering and architectural interests and appointed by SCNZ Council, D&H Steel are Finalist’s in the under $500,000, $1.5 million to $3million and the over $3million categories. D&H Steel’s CWB Manager John Frederickson says entering the awards enables the company to showcase challenging projects and the talent employed by the West Auckland based company to the wider industry and the public. Selection as Finalist in the under $500,000 category recognises D&H Steel’s work on the Waiouru Point featuring steel ‘Y’ Frames. The issue to be solved was how to improve the appearance of a pair of small spec warehouses with a strong form that would appeal to tenants. John says the architectural solution was the distinctive ‘Y’ frames at the front of the building taking design inspiration of fluidity and the birdlife from the nearby Tamaki estuary. The challenge for D&H Steel was to transform the architects “dream” into reality with a structure that is durable, robust, visually appealing and economical to build. “D&H Steel was proactive from the beginning using its experience and expertise to offer many viable options and redesigning the complex geometry and refining it to a practical and buildable solution. “Steel allowed us to create irregular shapes without the inefficiency of having to create a large number of molds. Spanning 10 levels the new build consists of 370 tonne of structural steel in the gravity frames and floor beams that support precast flooring. “The steel frames are temporarily braced with custom designed, reusable Reid Bar diagonal braces, which was also designed to provide temporary support for the precast walls during installation.
