The over $3 million category was for retro-fitting a new upper level to the Sylvia park shopping mall which opened to the public mid October 2020. “The engineers and architects were approached by Kiwi Properties to design a four hundred metre by sixty metre extension to the existing mall. Sited directly over the existing mall, the project had a stipulation that there was to be absolutely minimal disruption to the ‘live’ shopping Centre below.” Complex installation procedures and innovative methodology was required to allow continuity of trade. Throughout the project numerous innovative value engineering details by D&H were approved, which simplified some complex connection details for buildability and reduced installation time. Adding to the company’s success at the industry awards, D&H team members Angela Adams and Kelly Jeffries were selected Finalists in the Apprentice of the Year and Young Achiever of the Year categories respectively. John says Angela’s nomination reflected her passion for making things out of steel, working accurately and without supervision and never being phased with the additional burden of working in a traditionally male dominated environment. Kelly Jeffries nomination and selection as Finalist in the Young Achiever of the Year category reflects her consistent achievement within the company over a 10-year career starting as a Frontline Administrator and progressing to Fabrication Coordinator. Commencing in 2011 as Frontline Administrator doing reception duties, assisting with purchasing and learning the Document Control role, in 2013 Kelly accepted a new role as Production Administrator. “This is a key role within the company being the central point from which both documentation and information flows between the Production team and the wider D&H team,” says John. “It involves accurately and efficiently organising the work packs and parts required to enable the production line to continue to work without interruption and to ensure the production databases, spreadsheets and documents are always up to date, while others within production team are kept informed of any revisions to the process. Kelly has also provided training to twelve people in reception, document control and production administration positions. Kelly’s new role as Fabrication Coordinator involves analysing the fabrication drawings and planning the progression of the work through fabrication.” Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, D&H Steel has earned a reputation built on performance and prides itself on being one of New Zealand’s most preferred steel fabricators. “Our projects are all in the commercial to industrial range and typically in excess of $500,000. Currently we’re doing two large projects for Auckland University, one of which is the Recreation and Wellness Centre. That’s currently the biggest steel construction project in progress, at about 6000 tonnes of steel. We are involved in the North Shore Hospital and about to start on Project Maunga (Taranaki Base Hospital Acute Clinical Services Building), Site 6 Wynyard Quarter Innovation Precinct, and Sylvia Park Tower 3.” Adding to the company’s success, fabrication co-ordinator Kelly Jeffries was selected as a finalist in the Young Achiever of the Year category.
