Jani-King was established in Oklahoma in 1969 and now boasts 9000 franchise owners in 12 countries around the world. Arriving in New Zealand in 1998, Jani-King has more than 400 franchisees from Northland to Southland. Jani-King national sales manager Brian Valentine says the company has had tremendous growth in the past 12 months, due in part to its commitment to sustainability. “We have gone completely away from using harsh chemicals and we’re now using a range of probiotic cleaning products, which as well as protecting your surfaces and the environment, provide a better cleaning outcome that lasts longer than chemical cleaning alternatives.” Probiotic cleaners work by rapidly colonising a surface with good bacteria, or probiotics, which overwhelm the bad bacteria, or pathogens, by consuming all available resources, ultimately killing the pathogens. These probiotics then maintain a presence for up to 72 hours which allow them to prevent the spread of further pathogens. Because Jani-King’s cleaning products don’t contain harsh chemicals, they can be used anywhere, including locations that are often sensitive to other cleaning products like ducting systems and air conditioning units. Jani-King’s fogging solution can reach into areas where most cleaning products would be useless or simply not allowed, for example, air vents. “In New Zealand alone, it is estimated that 150,000 litres of chemicals are used just by our schools for cleaning every month, with most of these making their way into our water table and the environment at large,” Brian says. “Our range of probiotic cleaning products on the other hand are perfectly harmless to the environment when they’re flushed down a drain or rinsed onto land, after all, they’re found readily in the natural environment. We remain green while we clean!” The right systems, processes and training A green outlook is just one of Jani-King’s many and varied list of core values, but Brian says the overriding value that he follows is to change people’s lives one business at a time. “That’s why I wait here until 7pm or come in on Saturday mornings to meet people who are interested in becoming a franchisee,” he says. “They have got a goal to achieve and it’s our job to make it happen.” He says Jani-King is less of a commercial cleaning company and more of a training and support company. “We recruit the right people then we train them fully, then we back them up and help them to grow, if that’s what they want.” Jani-King’s ideal franchisee is a couple looking for an opportunity to earn extra income over and above their existing jobs. “As a franchisee, they have skin in the game and their business depends on them doing a good job every night. That is the benefit over traditional cleaning companies whose staff don’t turn up when they are supposed to. Our franchisees turn up because they have to, and in most instances, they love it.” PDQ Print is a full service o set & digital printing company based in Auckland, NZ.
