FORESTRY China Forestry Group New Zealand Operating a highly mechanised harvesting operation in Northland, Auckland and Taranaki, Steven Stokes says skilled sta , quality machinery, good forward planning and working with successful forestry companies have been the cornerstones of success for the business he founded in 2009. Growing up amongst the forestry industry, the opportunity to work in a Helensville woodlot eleven years ago gave birth to Stokes Logging Ltd. Starting with an old high track bulldozer, a digger and a crew of three keen young men, Steven has steadily evolved the business’ manpower, equipment and capability. “Initially we got a contract with Hancock Forest Management and we’ve grown the business through them. More recently in the last couple of years we have also been working with China Forestry Group.” Steven says the relationship with China Forestry Group has provided Stokes Logging with the opportunity of long term contracts in both Northland and Taranaki. “That has allowed us to o er long term stability to our sta and ensuring the gear is maintained and replaced to keep our operations running e iciently. Our work is mainly harvesting in corporate forests but we have one crew that does a private Stokes Logging – Solutions for all harvesting requirements woodlot in the summer months.” Operating ive crews, Stokes Logging produces around 1600 tonnes of logs per day. “I’ve now based the business in Whangarei and we run multiple crews so we can provide di erent con igurations, ensuring we have gear that gives the best results to the forest owners.” Steven re lects that the industry has changed a lot with the introduction of mechanization in all tasks, improving safety, crew performance and production. “We currently process 100% of our wood with fully optimized processing heads to ensure the customer gets the best quality and most accurate log. Our tether felling system allows a felling machine to be winched up and down slopes up to 50% grade; felling and extracting.” In total, Stokes Logging employs a team of 45 including its own in-house trainer/assessor and dedicated Human Resource manager—ensuring all systems are kept up to date and the skilled forestry workers are complying with all the systems. These machines are capable to process 80 ton per hour in good wood and probably do the job of 5 men on chainsaws.
