The Te Hiku Sports Hub in Kaitaia has been a real labour of love and unprecedented community support has made it a reality, says Te Hiku Sports Hub project manager Mark Osborne. The community has raised around $6,000,000, which got the ball rolling as it triggered a council contribution to take the project over the line, he says. “We’ve had very passionate support from people who have really championed the project,” he says. “Through massive community support the project has had great leadership.” The idea for the project had its beginnings when a need for a new outdoor pool, to replace one that was coming to the end of its life, was identified. A scoping report resulted in the larger project and Te Hiku Sports Hub incorporated was created to spearhead the vision. In addition to the funds raised by locals the $9.7m project is being funded by a $3m contribution from the Far North District Council, $3m from Far North District Council, $3m from the Provincial Growth Fund, $1.1m from Foundation North, $1.4m from Northland Regional Council and $500,000 from the Lotteries Commission. Mark says a key challenge is that over the decade it has taken to get the project to this point the budget has remained the same and so the support of local firms has been an integral part of the project delivery to the local community. The facility will include both an aquatics wing and sports wing, the aquatics wing will include a 25-metre lane pool, learn to swim pool, physiotherapy quality hydrotherapy pool and toddlers water play area. The sports wing will have a fitness gym, function rooms and team changing rooms for field sports. Mark says there is also some room for future expansion. Te Hiku Sports Hub will offer lane swimming, fun pool activities, hydrotherapy for rehabilitation and help locals learn how to swim. The large sporting fields will host a range of sports including soccer, rugby, rugby league, archery and cricket. There are also eight hard courts. Local contractors and suppliers were used where possible.
