| 91 COMMUNITY FNR Construction: Te Hiku Sports Hub The Te Hiku Sports Hub facility will include both an aquatics wing and sports wing, the aquatics wing will include a 25-metre lane pool, learn to swim pool, physiotherapy quality hydrotherapy pool and toddlers water play area. Overcoming the challenges Te Hiku Sports Hub has been made possible due to the dedication of the community, contractors and volunteers, says Te Hiku Sports Club chairperson and managing director of Stonecraft Construction Mike Mitcalfe. “To get a modern aquatic facility created here it’s been like pushing a big boulder up a mountain and having it repetitively roll back down again over the past 20 years,” he says describing the process and many challenges that have been overcome. One signi cant challenge was keeping the project on budget in a pandemic. Originally Stonecraft Construction was not going to be involved in the project but stepped in out of necessity to assist when contractors became locked in Auckland during various lockdowns. Stonecraft Construction, which specialises in pool construction, stepped in as an advisor to main contractor FNR Construction. It has been able to leverage its buying power to create economic bene ts for the project as well as complete specialist aspects of the project including pipework and componentry installation. “We have been able to pull supply chains into the project that has kept it on or below budget. It’s been a win-win,” explains Mike. “The aim has always been to deliver the best quality project and I’m really proud of how the community, various contractors and others have pulled together to achieve this.” Stonecraft Construction has a long history in the region. It was started by Mike, who has a background in masonry construction, around 45 years ago out of Northland, and completes work nationwide and internationally. It employs around 20 sta and completes swimming pool, concrete and masonry construction. Stonecraft Construction is a real local success story and projects completed have won awards. Mike says the company is incredibly busy with a strong forward work booked. “We don’t like to blow our own trumpet but in reality we are just incredibly busy.” The company’s solution and budget oriented focus is obvious in its contribution to the Te Hiku Sports Hub. “We are fortunate to be able to o er our team of creative, solution-orientated thinkers to add value to this project, people who love what they do and are committed to excellence.” Mike says it has been humbling to be involved in such an important project for Northland and to assist such a dedicated team. “This is a real community project with a lot of good will and respect shown by a lot of people to get it achieved. It’s about making things better for the region. I know the outcome of this project is important and it will be a major community asset that people will enjoy for many years to come.” 09 408 0751 www.stonecraftconstruction.co.nz 44 Matthews Ave, Kaitaia sales@stonecraftnz.com Award Winning Pools & Spas Our custom Stonecraft swimming pools and spa pools feature the very best of Aotearoa design and workmanship.
