No job is too large or too far away “Because the harbour is in such disarray, that no longer exists. So we’re trying to turn that state of disarray around, reduce the sediment ȵow from the land into the waterways, with the end goal of returning the harbour back to health.ȋ Keeping the sediment on the land has been KMR’s main focus, with a target of a 0 reduction over a ten year period. For the first eighteen months KMR’s objective has been keeping stock out of the waterways, and then riparian margin planting to prevent the sediment from drifting into the moana. Ζn the future, the programme will look at erodible hill slopes, space planting back from the bank, trialling native aorestation on areas of land that is slowly but surely heading into the waterways. “What if we planted hill sides in manuka, kanuka or totara? Auckland Council did some great research around stream back erosion, and tī kōuka (cabbage trees) are phenomenal. “hey can live semi-water logged and do great work keeping stream banks intact. So we are looking at what the science is showing us about right tree, right place to keep the land where it needs to be.ȋ By the end of February 0 3, 3 0 kilometres of fencing had either been completed or contracted — more than the distance between Whangarei to Auckland and back again — and ,000 native plants (11 hectares) have been planted or contracted for planting in riparian, wetland and coastal areas. “Sediment reduction is our key thing, and about 0,000 hectares of land is now under active management by us with the land owners including farmers, councils, forestry and other groups. 357 Sediment Reduction Plans have been developed and contracted to underpin project works, and over landowners have taken or are taking action voluntarily through KMR, or are engaging with KMR to develop proMects. “This means KMR has been working with close to a third of the estimated fifteen hundred landowners in the catchment. “We also work with various other groups including Fonterra and various iwi and hapu in our catchment area, so that we don’t double up on work already underway. So it’s not just us doing all the door knocking; its working with people and groups who have connections and already doing the work, to help catapult some of their work to benefit the harbour.ȋ As a Jobs for Nature investment, KMR also supports local, nature-based employment, training, and accreditation, focusing on young people. At the end of its first full year of operations (30 June 0 ), KMR had successfully invested in local businesses, communities, and young people by, accrediting contractor businesses and 1 nurseries, many of which aɝliate to local iwi hapū. Ζt had trained 3 Field Advisors, bringing the total trained to 1, and created more than 0,000 hours of new work, with over 3 ,000 hours planned. “We are at the latter stages of creating a soil conservation strategy as a founding document that will look to the next six to seven years and consider other options available to us beyond stock exclusion and planting. “How can we utilise new science and lead the way in keeping land where it needs to be and fresh water fresh" Ζt is part of being generational change. “We know we can’t solve everything in ten years but if we can set up the framework for people to keep doing what we are doing in the future then that is a great start for us.ȋ Nau Mai, Haere Mai Restoring and protecting the mauri of Kaipara Moana The Kaipara Moana Remediation Programme is the largest landscape programme underway in New Zealand.
