WITH OVER 20 YEARS EXPERIENCE IN THE BAY OF PLENTY... hamishrosspainters.co.nz What could be more perfect than a husband-and-wife team who blend the art of designing beautiful homes, with the craft of breathing life into those beautiful designs and their customers’ dreams – and that is exactly the vision behind Gardo Group. Based in the small Western Bay of Plenty settlement of Omokoroa, 30 minutes north of Tauranga, Gardo Group was born from the single desire to streamline the process of design and construction by bringing the disciplines together under one roof. “We felt that if we could create a company that incorporated both design and build, it would make it an easier process for the client,” says Managing Director Chris Gardner. “We used the development of our own home in Omokoroa as the starting point for the business in 0 0. We demonstrated that even with a smaller budget, with very good design at the very start you can build a very nice high-quality home. “Ultimately our aspirations are to build good quality high-end architecturally designed homes. We really want to get more people going down the path of design-and-build homes.ȋ For Chris and Hannah, the customer journey commences with a strong emphasis on collaboration right from the very start so that both designer and builder can understand what the customer’s expectations are, what they would like in a new home, their lifestyle and of course their budget. “Hannah has a detailed checklist that she goes through with the client to draw out specific and novel requirements. For example, we’re currently building a home in Omokoroa, and Hannah determined that because of the clients’ work commitments, two separate master bedrooms were required.ȋ One of the early meetings with the client will generally be held on site so that Hannah and Chris can understand the primary views, the sun orientation, and any specific challenges with the land that might inȵuence design. Together they peg the building out to show the client how the building’s footprint impacts on the land. Chris works closely with Hannah while she develops concept drawings, discussing refinements for both buildability and budget. “Hannah and I bring a real synergy to the design process, which ultimately inȵuences the cost and eɝciency of the build for the client’s benefit. Ζn my opinion, having your own in-house designer makes such a dierence to the client, and delivering what they want, making it more aordable, and keeping it on budget. That Hannah and I are also a couple just reinforces that synergy.ȋ Gardo Group’s latest design and build proMect is the Omokoroa home, complete with its two master bedrooms. With a total ȵoor area of 330sqm, the design includes a partial second storey. The client’s focus on ecological sensitivity is reȵected in the home’s sustainable design featuring solar power, rainwater reuse, thermally broken joinery, and sustainably sourced materials. “The site the home is being built on is challenging and required foundation piles to be driven into the ground,ȋ says Chris. ȊThe way the home has been designed and engineered makes it high-end.ȋ The house boasts a cantilevered timber ȵoor, covering over half the footprint, creating a ȵoating eect over the landscape. The exterior is predominantly comprised of charred timber cladding with Oamaru Stone accents, while the interior has high-end finishes. With the addition of a detached 60sqm workshop, the project will be completed and keys handed over in early 0 . Over the three years that Gardo Group has been operating, it has progressed from building its owners own beautifully designed home, to a range or renovation projects to the new large-scale high-end home in Omokoroa. “We take great pride in doing a good job for every client and we enjoy building which we believe is important. We aim to look back at the end of every project and be proud of what we have designed and built.ȋ
