Russell Fredric As the last Māori owned or controlled entity to get its entry into the 2023 Te Taitokerau Māori Business of the Year awards, Auckland and Northland building firm Reid Builders held out little hope of featuring amongst the winners on the night. “I was a bit late to the party and for that reason I thought we wouldn’t have a chance of winning anything,” says Reid Builders managing director Dave Reid. “So I wasn’t prepared at all. When we won the Māori (nterprise Award (employing more than 1 sta) we were blown away, and then we got the Supreme Award: Taitokerau Māori Business of the Year Award on top and that blew us right away.” Dave says there are a lot of good building businesses in the awards, however Reid Builders is now on its way to becoming the first Tier 1 Māori building business ever, with its current proMects demonstrating the firm’s capability in high rise solutions. “That has never been done before, so it will be a pretty substantial achievement for Māori.ȋ Reid Builders is currently building the Loxley at Takapuna which features 47 apartments across two six-level buildings, connected by a covered walkway. ȊOnce we get to finish this proMect at the end of this year, we’ll be able to show we’re capable of building this type of project, and in turn it puts us in that Tier 1 pool of contractors who are also capable of doing that type of work.” Reid Builders’ work on the Loxley has already helped the company to gain a further apartment proMect, this one in Newmarket and twice as high as the Loxley. ȊNot a lot of people get these opportunities and it’s something we are quite privileged to have. It is a lot of work, but we have good people around us and a good support network. We are at a stage now where we have some really massive potential and growth capability, and we’re going to continue to push for it.” Reid Builders started in 2014 when Dave and his brother quit their jobs and moved from the Bay of Islands to Auckland, with a project due to start on their arrival. The week before they moved, their client suddenly stopped communicating, and the brothers arrived in Auckland with nothing to do on a Monday morning. “So it wasn’t the easiest start. We got on the phone and talked to a few people and by Tuesday, we were employed.” It has been onwards and literally upwards ever since for Reid Builders, which completes residential and commercial work as well as renovations and remodelling, and eventually scaled up to be able to cater for midscale commercial developments and large scale housing developments, from feasibility and procurement through to construction and delivery. The privately-owned Reid Builders still holds its solid family values, and builds long-lasting relationships with its clients. “This is imperative to how we operate and we have a proven track record of happy clients who have loved working with us.” Reid Builders has the capability and resources to oer full-service from draft concept to final build. The company’s upper management has more than 150 years of combined experience in the construction industry, so its clients can be assured they are working with experienced professionals who work to the highest levels attainable.
