| 93 Windyridge School: Woodview Construction COMMUNITY Kelly Deeks New block caters for growing school Exterior learning spaces are within easy access, with a bridge connecting the second ȵoor to the bank and orchard at the rear. A new classroom block for a growing school that is passionate about its links to its environment is connecting Windy Ridge School teachers and students to nature in more ways than one. Ministry of (ducation lead advisor - infrastructure Susi Marinkovich says Windy Ridge School in Glenfield, Auckland is a school in an enviable setting, nestled amongst significant trees and native bird life. Ζts roll sits between 0 to 0 students, more people are moving to the area, and further residential development is planned locally. ȊThe school is continuing to grow,ȋ she says. ȊThis newly-built two-storey, 10 teaching space block was designed to blend in with the school’s environment and provide a healthy, beautiful, and inspiring space for students and teachers.ȋ The new building caters not only to the school’s growing roll, but also to the low energy, healthy building demands of the environmentally conscious school. The classroom block is a stunning showcase of a simple building elevated by touches that enhance and inspire. With a compact form to help increase performance and reduce cost, this building is high-performance, low energy, and healthy. Ζts interior spaces have been planned for the school’s future growth, with varying sizes of teaching and breakout spaces, and a centralised social staircase and gallery where they whole school can gather. Biophillic design brings nature inside with the finishes to the Autex Acoustics New Zealand wall linings and Ζnzide ȵoors creating a theme in every learning area. Downstairs is the beach, the bush, and the gardens, and after climbing the Pohutukawa Grove in the social staircase, upstairs spaces are themed as the mountains, the lakes, and the forest. (xterior learning spaces are within easy access from both ȵoors, with a bridge connecting the second ȵoor to the bank and orchard at the rear. ȊΖt feels like you’re in the treetops,ȋ Susi says. The building’s exterior colour scheme blends it into the surrounding gum and pohutukawa trees, and the grassy bank it sits in front of. A breeze balustrade around the second ȵoor decks at the front of the building uses simple cut-outs to reveal patterns of air movement. Ζnsol +orizon canopies are fixed above windows on the ground ȵoor while stunning dapple perforated screens on the staircases feature changing scenes, depending on the angle and the time of day. The construction process ran smoothly on site thanks to the whole proMect team, which is made up of Delivery Manager Olga Lozova “Windy Ridge School is nestled amongst significant trees and native bird life. Its roll sits between 220 to 250 students.” from the Ministry of (ducation, architects Joseph Lyth and Mevuni Weerackody from Respond, proMect manager Tracey van Staden from Beca and repeat Ministry contractor Woodview Construction whose team formed a great relationship with the school. Woodview Construction finished their work on site by gifting the school new vegetable garden planter boxes to enable garden to table teaching. Windy Ridge School’s senior students moved into their new building at the end of February. 0800 345 789 | www.cutts.co.nz | info@cutts.co.nz AUCKLAND PLUMBING, GAS, DRAINAGE, HEATING & BATHROOM SPECIALISTS OUR SERVICES • Gas hot water • Hot water cylinders • Leak detection • Tapware • Waste disposals • Gas hob & cookers • Blocked drains • Spouting & downpipes • Water filtration • Backflow prevention • Home heating RESPOND ARCHITECTS AUCKLAND WELLINGTON CHRISTCHURCH QUEENSTOWN We believe in designing spaces that truly connect people and purpose.
