The Bupa owned village has been open for two years with 0 of the planned villas built and occupied. Already there is a waiting list of over 300 people despite Whangārei being well endowed with retirement complexes. 9illage manager, Jessie Beddis, says people are attracted to the village’s smaller size and the continuity of care that is oered by the care home and serviced apartments. ȊOur residents tell us there is a real community atmosphere, it’s like family here. They love that it is a small village as they get to know their neighbours and the Bupa team. The continuation of care is a huge drawcard as people won’t need to move to the other side of town if they ever need aged residential care,ȋ believes Jessie. ȊThere’s quite a few retirement villages in Whangārei including some big complexes and small private villages, but that’s definitely not hindering us in attracting new residents,ȋ she says. Along with the one, two, and three-bedroom villas, Totara Garden’s will have 1 serviced apartments and bedded care home providing rest home-, hospital-, and dementia-level aged residential care. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, and the villas thoughtfully laid out with an internal access garage, modern appliances, double-glazing, built-in wardrobes, heat pump and air conditioning unit, and a emergency alarm system. The village’s communal hub opens on July 3 with a celebration morning tea and will provide a space for residents to catch up with each other and the Bupa team, and to take part in a variety of activities on oer. The new communal facilities include a library, movie room, billiard table, games and activity room, plus outdoor putting green and an inbuilt BB4 and outdoor dining area. ȊWe get a lot of comments about how well designed the village is and there are some beautiful viewpoints. We are fortunate to be in the new Totara Gardens subdivision as it’s very attractive and there’s a supermarket, doctor and pharmacy Must five minutes’ drive away. There is also a great community caf« next door,ȋ says Jessie. ȊWe are quite unique in the market as we oer fixed weekly fees for our residents. These fees are fixed for life, which is quite different from other retirement village providers, she says. ȊWe really listen to our residents and consult with them, especially for things like our monthly calendar of events. People are incredibly happy to chat with me and other members of the team and we take onboard their feedback about what they want. We have a regular happy hour and a bus trip outing every second month. ȊWe also host a monthly men’s brunch which is a chance for us to find out what interests them and what they would like to see happen at the village.ȋ Jessie says the building programme is progressing well despite this summer’s heavy rains. The 3 remaining villas are either under construction or soon to start and are being built by Classic Builders Whangārei.
