Gideon Construction is now working on Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s O Mahurangi - Penlink project, a new 7km highway between Whangaparāoa Road and State Highway 1. This highly anticipated highway is set to increase the resilience of the local roading network and get people around faster whether they be driving, cycling, or walking. Alan is all too aware of the failures of recently built motorways, like the Ngāruawāhia section of the Waikato Expressway, which five years after opening in 2013 had already been repaired nine times by the contractor. Similarly Wellington’s mega motorway Transmission Gully already needed resurfacing work just over eight months after opening. He says there are often many contributing factors to these failures but generally it’s a design flaw driven by budget constraints. Meanwhile the extension to State Highway 1 from Pūhoi to Warkworth is a fantastic piece of engineering, which drives beautifully, has made a treacherous road safe, and should be extended and rolled out to Whangārei immediately.
