48 | Project takes top award Harkin Roofing took out the 2023 Roofing Association of New Zealand Commercial Roof of the Year award for its work on the GIB factory at Tauriko. Harkin Roofing T T Karen Phelps CONTRACTING Winning the 2023 Roofing Association of New Zealand Commercial Roof of the Year award was the result of the huge expertise gained over 45 years in business for company Harkin Roofing. The national accolade for the GIB factory in Tauriko clearly demonstrates Harkin Roofing’s capabilities over multiple challenging facets of the project, says company owner Deborah Harkin, which saw Harkin Roofing in charge of installing the roof, cladding, gutters, downpipes and flashing around all penetrations. The main building roof of the factory involved 70,000 linear metres of DD630 product and Harkin Roofing completed both roll to roof and roll to ground. Deborah says that this was the first time Harkin Roofing had rolled to roof demonstrating its ability to successfully tackle new challenges. “Throughout the buildings there were hundreds of mechanical and service pipe penetrations through the roof and walls,” explains Deborah. “Some of these were very large diameters requiring custom-made welded upstand flashings, with large back trays to the ridge. The plant tower created several challenges for us to overcome, as it was a height of 20 metres above floor level. We had to clad behind structural stairways, which meant limited access while using multiple large access machines. The back of the plant tower above the roof required a complex scaffold system to enable access.” The gypsum storage building - 12,500 linear metres of 32-degree roof of DD630 – was another challenge as the steep roof meant installation was limited to only fine days with no wind or rain. The project also involved installation of 150mm thick Kingspan insulation coolstore panel from level one to five to close off the inside of the plant tower to the rest of the warehouse. “This was installed after all the Gyptech piping had been installed and roofing therefore, panels had to be man handled into place around the complex network.” Deborah says exclusion zones had to be used for all sub-contractors. “This created a complex site and with so many different sub-contractors operating exclusion zones it meant that the site became a maze that was constantly moving. Excellent communication was necessary and extensive planning in order to get the work completed safely and within the set timeframes.” Another complexity was the fact that there was $100 million worth of plant installed that had to happen during the build of the project. “The whole build was driven around installing the Gyptech system. This meant that the building works were done in a challenging order. We would lay one roof and then have to switch over to a different area across the site due to that being the next priority.” Harkin Roofing was started in 1979 by Deborah and Brad’s parents Rex and Sue. Deborah and Brad took over the management of the company in 2015 and are now the sole owners and have a focus on continued growth. Harkin Roofing purely focuses on the commercial and industrial markets and has supplied and installed roofs to a range of commercial and industrial buildings over the years from supermarkets, shopping centres, schools, malls and warehouses. “We just love big commercial projects,” says Deborah. “It’s a real passion of ours.” Harkin Roofing operates from 1200sqm custom built premises at 94 Gargan Road in Tauriko, Tauranga. It manufactures its own flashings giving the ability to respond very quickly to customers’ needs. Deborah says that it is Harkin Roofing’s professional team who are experts and have a strong emphasis on quality control that results in a consistently high standard of workmanship. The company’s services include supply and installation of long run roofing and cladding, membrane products, the Kingspan insulated panel system and edge protection. 0508 KONNECT (566 632) KONNECTFASTENINGSYSTEMS.CO.NZ Your one stop shop for all your roofing accessory needs Proud to supply the NZ Roofing Industry Proud to support Harkin Roo ng Ltd Make possible happen Family business Succession planning Tax & accounting Buy/sell transactions Business strategy Budgeting & forecasting kpmg.co.nz/enterprise Whether you’re an entrepreneur or owner-operator, growing your business or looking to protect your family legacy, KPMG is open to your business.
