OMAET Contracting CONTRACTING OMAET Contracting Ltd. is a Māori whānau owned, civil construction & drainage business. A business with a heartfelt legacy story underpinning its own relatively new beginnings as Site Forman/ Drainlayer Taylah Te Amo, explains. “My dad’s life mahi was spent doing the same sort of mahi: civil, earthworks and drainage with a taste for the big stuff and after he passed away, my whole whānau got together and said that we wanted to carry on doing what he did,” explains Taylah. Taylah had been working alongside his dad for as long as he could remember and together with the whānau, agreed that it made sense for him to keep that knowledge flowing with his mum’s dad, Graeme Edmonds, taking the reins in the short term until Taylah himself has fully grown into the role. “We started up the new business OMAET Contracting and my Koro (Graeme) keeps on teaching me the stuff that Dad never got a chance to teach me. So we’re a very whānau orientated business, always looking out for each other. Underpinning the whānau business is a solid work ethic based on best practice combined with years of experience. Taylah’s dad had been in the civil siteworks & drainage business for more than 20 years. The whole whānau was fully immersed in it too so there were a lot of learnings about the business and its activity that we could tap into. They then decided to take the knowledge with them and to carry on the legacy starting with a clean slate. To build something up again starting small took time and patience. From hiring key people who all had strong relationships with Taylah’s dad to taking on small jobs that would give Taylah, by then 18 years old, the experience he needed to grow alongside the business with his Koro Graeme and other key people there to guide him. That was four years ago and they’ve gone from strength to strength. Now Taylah has the opportunity to pass on his knowledge to his younger siblings Alizay and Kiyara who are a part of the business also. Small residential jobs paved the way for them to start building a name for themselves with successful commercial tenders flowing through by 2021. “Next thing you know we have Key Clients where we are their preferred contractor travelling all over the motu to do mahi for them,” says Taylah. As their reputation has grown together with the scope of their jobs, they now have a strong team working full time to successfully achieve the work they tender for, whether it’s design and build, or a complete works package involving earthworks, drainage, utilities and concrete. Most jobs are urgent so business for their clients can continue as normal. OMAET Contracting pride themselves on hitting their deadlines while delivering the quality of work that means their tenders often rise to the top of the pile for the next job needing to be done efficiently and on time. “Next thing you know we have Key Clients where we are their preferred contractor travelling all over the motu to do mahi for them.” • Bulk aggregate supply • All grades of ready mix concrete • Fencing and retaining wall timber • Posts and poles • 6 Wheeler, Artic and Truck & Trailer Hire • Concrete Placers • Concrete Pump Hire Proudly supporting OMAET Contracting 021 525893 shane@smtlogistics.co.nz
