Pitch Black Construction BUILDING North Shore’s Pitch Black Construction specialises in architecturally designed new homes and character renovations throughout Auckland and Northland. Founder Joel Williams is entering his fifth year in business and anticipates this year will include notable projects and an own townhouse development down the track. “Our point of difference is our love of character homes and restoring them,” says Joel. “We really enjoy restoring old villas and bungalows around Auckland, many of which are governed by heritage covenants.” With a background in design, Joel’s natural flair shines through on every project through his meticulous attention to detail. Known for their love of and expertise in character home restorations and new builds, Pitch Black Construction offer full design and build services, managing projects from conception to completion. Joel is a licensed building practitioner, leading a team of qualified and experienced builders and apprentices. They are members of New Zealand Certified Builders and offer the NZCB 10-year Halo build guarantee on every build. “We’ll also do light commercial and shop fit outs,” says Joel. “No job is too small either, we’ll do it all from decks, retaining walls, kitchens and bathrooms, swimming pools and maintenance jobs.” Pitch Black Construction also provide feasibility and assessment for sub-dividable properties, working with you to maximise land value and build opportunities. “We’ve got a development of our own about to start,” says Joel, “a set of twoand three-bedroom character townhouses planned for Birkenhead. We haven’t started earthworks yet, but we have the architectural renderings and they’re going to be really cool modern cottages.” Demonstrative of Pitch Black Construction’s mastery of character home renovation is the transformation of a beautiful Victorian villa Joel restored himself. A Beach Haven villa circa 1902, the extensive project included a complete architectural redesign of the interior to fuse the best of old character charm and modern indoor-outdoor flow. “I bought this as an apprentice and once qualified, I basically rebuilt the whole thing “Our point of difference is our love of character homes and restoring them. It’s quite the transformation.” Original kauri weatherboards were stripped back and native kauri floors rejuvenated. Colonial windows and French doors sourced as replacement joinery. All fret work, lace, brackets, balustrading, eave brackets, corbels and finials were custom made to replace tired joinery. Two luxurious tiled bathrooms were installed and 3.3 high ceilings restored with brand new ceiling roses, battens and heritage scotia. Equally competent at challenging contemporary designs, Pitch Black Construction also completed a multi-unit, ultra-modern townhouse project in McLean Street. Excellent design ensures every inch of space was fully utilised to make the three-bedroom townhouses feel spacious and private. As a family-owned enterprise, they remain deeply rooted in the North Shore community, actively participating in community events, fundraisers, prize giveaways, and clean-ups.
