106 | BUILDING Livingstone Building NZ Ltd: Vinnies Hamilton T T Sue Russell Reputation garnered over decades Completed within a tight time frame, the hall serves several purposes. It supplies meals to the homeless and a space for them to gather, and the kitchen facility also produces meals for the elderly and alone, transported through Meals on Wheels. “I think projects of this nature are wonderful to be involved in. The opening on 20th January was a very happy occasion for all involved.” Project manager at Hamilton-headquartered Livingstone Building NZ, Alasdair McLennan, says the sheer variety of projects the construction company takes on makes for a challenging and very positive work life. The company has expanded considerably beyond its Waikato founding nearly 80 years ago, and today has five regional branches in the North Island. “I think one of the things that makes the company tick is that it’s very proud of its history and hasn’t lost the connection to the founding visions of the owners. “It’s a very people-focused company, and despite its growth it doesn’t have a really corporate feel to it,” says Alasdair, who has been with the company for three and a half years. He says he was drawn to working with the tier 2 company because he could see potential for his own career to evolve. “The directors and CEO have clear intentions to be the contractor of choice for the types of projects we get involved in, and the whole team are on the one page about this. “They are hugely supportive of the team progressing their own careers and taking up opportunities as these present.” One project recently completed has special meaning, given the importance it has to many less fortunate people in and around Hamilton. St Vincent de Paul’s (Vinnies’) new community kitchen and dining hall, located in Frankton, in the heart of Hamilton, is the result of years of planning and fundraising by the organisation and its supporters. Work proper on its construction began in August last year. “It was a straightforward and simple structure to build and was designed by Design Management Consultants,” says Alasdair. “This is our third consecutive project with DMC. Though it’s simplistic in design, DMC projects set high benchmarks for engineering quality, so it is a very strong, durable structure that will service the community well for decades to come.” Completed within a tight time frame on December 9, the hall serves several purposes. It supplies meals to the homeless and a space for them to gather, and the kitchen facility also produces meals for the elderly and alone, transported through Meals on Wheels. Once fully functional, the facility will be in operation more or less seven days a week. “I think projects of this nature are wonderful to be involved in. The opening on 20th January was a very happy occasion for all involved. Vinnies were so looking forward to seeing it operational knowing the benefits it would bring the community.” Livingstone Building NZ has carved out a strong niche of sectors it works within. As an approved contractor for the Ministry of Education, the company has been responsible for the upgrade and redevelopment of many schools throughout the North Island. “My first job when I started was the new Rototuna Library Te-Kete Aronui, and right now I’m out at Hamilton Airport on a very exciting development for the upcoming international flights the airport will be receiving from 16 June of this year,” Alasdair says. Other projects include the award-winning Stake and Community Building at Temple View, on the western edge of Hamilton, for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the awe-inspiring Velodrome just north of Cambridge, and the Waikato Regional Headquarters Tristram Precinct in Hamilton Central. Livingstone Building NZ is a multi-disciplinary construction company offering early contractor engagement, design and build, build only, and complete project management through to handing over the keys. “We’ve got great capability and a very strong reputation garnered over decades of delivering quality projects on time and to budget, building excellence.”\ aaron@pactsteel.co.nz www.pactsteel.co.nz Proud to support Livingstone Building NZ Ltd Residential/Commercial Brick and Blocklayers Proud to support Livingstone Building NZ Ltd brickandblocklaying.co.nz
