For residents Robin and his wife Karen, the decision to make the move to Bupa Tōtara Gardens Retirement Village was fuelled by their desire for security and a low-maintenance lifestyle. They were drawn by the smaller size of the village, its attractive layout and great proximity to local facilities. “We felt Tōtara Gardens Retirement Village had a very quiet, relaxing atmosphere,” Robin says, adding that they also appreciated having a care home on-site. No strangers to Whangārei, Robin and Karen spent most of their younger married and working life in the area, and after a period of time in Hamilton, decided to make the move back north. “Because we’ve lived in the area, we have family here including children and grandchildren, who we are able to visit and who also come to see us here,” says Robin, noting many fellow village residents also chose Tōtara Gardens Retirement Village to remain close to family. Northland’s beautiful beaches were another draw card, as well as the plethora of activities on offer at the village. Robin leads a ukulele class every Wednesday, made up of village residents, who enjoy learning and socialising over a shared love of music. Bupa is a respected name in New Zealand’s retirement market.
