Newey Transport T T Anne Boswell “We employ Northland people, and we use a wide net of local engineering services for the repairs and maintenance of our fleet. We support the Northland economy to keep the merry-go-round going.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT From a single truck and a big dream, Newey Transport has rumbled its way into the heart of Northland’s forestry scene. What began in 2002 as Ian Newey’s oneman, one-machine mission is now a 35-strong fleet powering the region’s logging industry – 19 trucks run by independent operators, and 16 wearing the Newey name with pride. Transport runs in Ian’s blood. A third-generation transport operator, his grandfather ran school buses in Invercargill, while his father spent two decades behind the wheel of Golden Bay cement trucks. “It’s both a passion and a career,” Ian says. That passion began early. He left college at 16 to work in forestry, and he has combined his hands-on industry experience with his love of trucks to build a thriving business. Today, Newey Transport delivers around 80 loads of logs a day throughout the upper North Island, servicing destinations from Kaitaia to the Hunua Ranges. “It’s a busy operation with fantastic people,” Ian says. Family owned and operated, the company has grown to include a skilled administration and senior management team and on-site workshops. A strong company culture is a cornerstone of the business, something Ian attributes to his wife, Shelley. As head of HR and people at Channel Infrastructure, Shelley’s influence and knowledge is woven into Newey Transport’s philosophy. “She has set the culture for the business,” Ian says. “It has her fingerprints all over it.” That culture is guided by a set of clear values, delivered in an acrostic format: Noone gets hurt. Everyone speaks honestly. We succeed together. Embracing our differences. You are important. “These values are not only for our staff, but for our management team as well,” Ian says. “It gives them a clear understanding of what the business is about. If we’ve had a day where things haven’t gone to plan, it grounds us back to what we’re doing.” While many companies focus on customers, Ian places equal – if not greater – value on his team. “Some businesses say that customers are the most important thing, but for me, our staff is the most important asset of our business,” he says. “And that’s without taking away from our wonderful customers. But without our staff, I wouldn’t be able to provide our customers with the high-quality service we do.” Newey Transport recently expanded into heavy haulage, transporting machinery and equipment – a reflection of their ongoing commitment to grow alongside the industry. A staunch Northlander, Ian is passionate about giving back to the region. “We’re supporting the logging sector by shifting product,” he says. “We employ Northland people, and we use a wide net of local engineering services for the repairs and maintenance of our fleet. “We support the Northland economy to keep the merry-go-round going.” As chair of the National Road Carriers Association, Ian continues to advocate for the region and the industry he loves. “We are proud to provide a service to the logging industry,” he says. “It is a dynamic industry that gives a lot of people so much. We love doing what we do.” LOG CARTAGE COMPANY BASED IN SUNNY NORTHLAND 09 470 0850 www.ten4.co.nz Proudly supporting Newey Transport transport engineering for repairs, maintenance, design & manufacturing.
