We try to look after our staff as best we can and that creates continuity across their skill-set and they take a lot of pride in their work.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT General manager at Robinson Asphalts, Cole Johnston, attributes the success of the business partly to taking on complex projects that result in a domino effect of generating other work. “We are flat-tack. We’ve seen a drop in the market in the last six months, but we’ve managed to keep enough workload in front of us to keep everyone flat-out day-to-day,” he says. Robinson Asphalts offers an extensive range of services – a mixture of civil, landscape and intensive amenities works “where we are dealing with the public, local businesses and councils, causing as little disruption as possible”. The company’s capability, full workload and commitment to quality does not specifically explain the reason for being recognised in six successive Civil Contractors Northland (CCNZ) awards, but Cole provides some insights. “At the core, it’s having the skill-set to deliver the works. We’ve got really high staff retention, I think our average is just over 10 years. We try to look after our staff as best we can and that creates continuity across their skill-set and they take a lot of pride in their work. “We focus on a high-quality finish and looking after the client as well as looking after the public and the stakeholders.” Robinson Asphalts offers end-to-end services for residential, commercial and special projects, including demolition, ground and site works, drainage, kerbing and edging, timber work, including retaining walls, concrete, asphalt and landscaping and even cycle and walking-track formation. Last year, Robinson Asphalts received the strongly contested CCNZ award for construction projects $2 million and over for the Whangarei Basin bus facilities upgrade. Undertaken for Whangarei District Council, the $3.6 million project was a major re-vamp of the town basin’s bus and visitor facilities, which was started in August 2022 and completed in September 2023. T T to page 40 It included safer bus stops for tour buses and cruise ship buses, new public toilets near the playground, upgraded car parks, and more mobility-friendly parking. There are also new high-amenity footpaths, landscaping and way-finding signs from Pūtahi Park through to Hundertwasser Art Centre, and on towards the already upgraded children’s playground, which was also completed by Robinson Asphalts. “It was a full scope of works; we [also] rebuilt a car park and a little bit of roadway realigning kerbs and rebuilt traffic islands. “There was installing some Corten [steel] sculptures and some other big artwork pieces and moving a couple of quite big pohutukawa trees.” RESIDENTIAL COMMERCIAL INDUSTRIAL Currie Electrical provide a full electrical service – domestic, industrial, commercial as well as providing a comprehensive maintenance service to some of Northlands’ leading businesses.
