56 | Trailers that go the distance The Pinto range of models is extensive: no fewer than 16 main types of standard trailer with a total of 93 variants. MANUFACTURING Pinto Trailers T T Hugh de Lacy Innovation is in the DNA of near-50-year-old brand Pinto Trailers, which has gained a huge reputation from being built entirely of New Zealand products. That reputation has spread nation-wide, with Pinto Trailers being as widely used in the South Island as in the North. “Pinto Trailers are wholly New Zealand designed and manufactured, and we only partner with New Zealand-based businesses, so we know we are getting quality products and parts to put on our trailers,” says Brad Kettle, the company’s business development manager. “We don’t purchase overseas parts as this can lead to unsafe materials being used, which can break and crack under New Zealand’s harsh weather and topography. “The Pinto name has become synonymous with quality and durability over 46 years of New Zealand trailer manufacturing, and we are one of the few remaining ‘genuine’ trailer manufacturers left in New Zealand.” The Pinto range of models is extensive: no fewer than 16 main types of standard trailer with a total of 93 variants, not to mention bespoke models the company also builds. One-, two- and three-axle options are available, with or without brakes, with a GVM (gross vehicle mass) ranging from 950kg up to 3500kg, depending on trailer types. For most of its life, Pinto Trailers has been based in Auckland, but it was recently acquired by BLM Engineering – just Pinto’s third owner in its history – and the head office and production facilities were moved to their present site on Snell Street in Morrinsville, with a staff of more than 40. The new headquarters provide plenty of room, with 2490sqm of factory and office floor space sitting on an ample 1.55ha site. BLM Engineering’s history goes back even further than Pinto Trailers’ to 1947, when it was set up in Morrinsville to meet the growing engineering needs of the Waikato region, and going on to build up a massive portfolio of successful projects, large and small. BLM is particularly suited to the manufacture of Pinto Trailers, because it specialises in carbon steel fabrication, precision machining, stainless steel fabrication and mechanical services, making it eminently qualified to carry on Pinto production under the same New Zealand-bred standards that have always distinguished the brand. “Our trailer designs have been made by Kiwis for Kiwi road and farm conditions, making them a safe towing option for our customers,” Brad says. “As new technology comes to market, we integrate the right options into our trailer designs, so we are constantly keeping up with the trends and safety features as they come to market. “All Pinto trailers are fully welded to maximise strength, then totally hot-dip galvanized to ensure a long, rust-free life – in fact so long that we provide a 10-year structural guarantee on every trailer we build. “We aim to be the most trusted and innovative trailer manufacturer, providing tailored solutions that meet the need of a diverse customer base, ensuring safety, durability and performance for years to come,” Brad says.
