The recent quiet period in the residential construction market hasn’t stopped Topp Concrete Cutting from starting the process of expanding from Tauranga and Taupo into Rotorua. Based at owner Michael and Shona Topp’s Kaimai Ranges lifestyle block, Topp Concrete Cutting is a long-established business in the Bay of Plenty, though Michael and Shona took it over just two years ago from the Trealor family. “The residential building market, which makes up a small proportion of our business, has slowed markedly, but we’re able to push on because of the ongoing needs of our bigger commercial clients like Red Stag, OJI, BM Century and the geo-thermal and electric power plants,” Michael says. “We’ll tackle any job, no matter how small, but our preferred market segment is the big jobs where our skills and equipment are in greatest demand.” Michael and Shona were fortunate to inherit highly experienced staff when they took over the company, with some of its cutting experts having been there for more than 20 years. “We’ve got some old boys working for us who have forgotten more about concrete-cutting than I’ll ever know, and they bring with them huge experience to pass down to the next generation of cutters and drillers,” Michael says. “We have spent a lot on upgrading equipment, staff and in-house policies with health and safety, with our latest win becoming Totika accredited over the last two years, enabling us to get into larger-scale jobs.” No less important than the quality of its staff is the versatility of Topp Concrete Cutting’s advanced equipment, allowing it to offer a range of services, including but not limited to, hand, blade and wire sawing, as well as core drilling. The wire-cutting machine can be mounted on a concrete wall or structure, and it drives a long wire embedded with diamonds to make precision cuts from four to 40 metres using different pulley set-ups, great for demolition cutting. “The machinery is very expensive and requires skill and expertise, but it allows us to make very accurate cuts in walls. “We can also cut concrete walls with a giant wall saw-blade likewise bolted to the wall – great for large and small openings in walls. “With these bits of equipment we’re able to do a lot of demolition work at geo-thermal and power plants, a recent job being to replace an old turbine by cutting up its plinth underground,” Michael says. “Beyond that there are lots of smaller jobs for the likes of builders, electricians and plumbers, along with earthquake strengthening.” The company’s core-drilling capacity is most frequently used on existing buildings requiring holes to be driven through concrete foundations or underground to allow wiring and associated services to be installed. Holes up to 750m in diameter can be drilled. It’s in that field that Topp Concrete Cutting has felt the residential construction downturn most acutely – it’s becoming a crowded market with a lot of competition starting up in the Tauranga, Taupo and Rotorua areas the company services.
