The company had its beginnings in 1975 when Neville and Val Mace started out with a ute and spade. Today, the company boasts a portfolio of some of the most bold and ambitious landscaping projects in the region, with a team of 65 across three divisions. While no longer hands-on with the day-today running of the business, Neville is still involved with the development aspects, with the company recently moving to a new premises at Takanini – not an easy job after being on the previous site for 35 years, managing director Michelle Mace says. But with the nursery and landscaping business being run from the same premises, space was running out. The new premises are around four times larger and “a big step from where we’ve come from”, Michelle says. It has given the business options to move forward and keep developing, she says. “Our nursery is able to produce a lot more, and focus on bulk lines now, and we’ve been able to set the offices and yard up to suit current, but also future requirements. It’s been quite exciting times.” As well as the landscaping business and their nursery, Mace Trees, the new site is also occupied by another sister company – Bark Wholesalers – to complete the trio. “It’s quite cool to have our group all on one site now. All of them had reached capacity where they were, and it’s good for the team to see how each part contributes.” Bark Wholesalers processes raw bark from forestry contracts at its custom-built plant to create garden mulch and specialty soil mixes for the landscape and horticulture industry – a good synergy for the landscaping and nursery businesses. The move to the new premises timed nicely with the company’s 50th anniversary this year, and Michelle is hoping to have it all set up and completed for a proper grand opening. “We just need some landscaping! When we get a chance, we’ll get the teams on to it and create something that can showcase our work to clients and staff.” She says Neville is proud of how far the business has come. “I’m not sure if he expected it would get to this when he first started in horticulture, but it’s a legacy built on a lot of hard work.” Most recently, the Mace team have been focusing on the continued development of long-standing industry relationships by extending their services into complete landscaping packages, with a strong focus on designand-build projects. There has also been a notable increase in the importance of green spaces and environmental awareness within commercial work. “There’s a lot happening in that space, and it’s creating some great opportunities for us to add value for our clients as well.” One standout project undertaken in 2024 was a 300sqm rooftop garden at 1 Queen Street, Auckland, which was established on the 21st floor as part of a major refurbishment of the building. “Obviously, that threw up a few different challenges. Our designer, Matt, had to put a lot into that project to come up with an appropriate scheme for the site that looked good, but would also withstand the exposed conditions of the location, and work for the installation and maintenance teams too.” The project was contract-grown in their nursery in custom-built trays that then fitted together in a grid-like system on the roof-top, and the logistics of how these were transported and installed to the design had to be a well-planned operation for the team on-site. Not to mention the health and safety required to work on one of the highest open rooftops in the city. The project will be entered in the next Landscapes of Distinction awards with the Registered Master Landscapers Association, of which Michelle has been a board member for the past four years. “Being able to contribute to building up the industry as well is fantastic, and I’ve really enjoyed that opportunity.”
