Kaimai Greens Hitting the sweet spot Passionate microgreen growers Scott Brindle and Bianca Kampshof of Kaimai Greens are kept busy on their new, 11ha property, which is located on the main Tauranga Road at Te Poi, close to the Kaimai ranges that separate Waikato from the Bay of Plenty. “We’ve been here since March of last year and it was quite tricky finding the right place,” Scott says. “It had to have the right land and especially it had to have perfect water. We’re quite lucky here as the water is drinking standard straight from the stream.” The couple operate using organic agriculture practices and specialise in supplying to many wholesalers. Their website, kaimaigreens.co.nz, provides viewers with outlets where their range of microgreens can be purchased. “We also supply a number of wholesale food providers,” says Scott. A microgreen is described as a seedling vegetable or herb, smaller than baby greens yet larger than sprouts, comprising a central stem, cotyledon leaves (first seed leaves) and varying degrees of one to three sets of young true leaves. Microgreens are harvested between seven and 28 days after sowing. Growing their crops is an all-year-round activity; however, that doesn’t mean exactly the same crop is grown all the time, as Scott explains. “We change our crop genus/species seasonally, which helps maintain a healthy soil structure, and we test this to ensure it remains vital and as nutritionally beneficial as possible.” It’s eight years now since the couple first started growing micro-greens, and Scott says there’s always more to learn. “You definitely never know everything. We’ve evolved systems to ensure we have repeatable quality throughout the year. Being in this new property, with its new biodiversity, has been an exciting journey for us.” Their greenhouses are fully organic certified and they also have a large area of land undergoing organic certification for future use. “We buy in a bit of organic compost and pumice to add to the soil structure to help get it right.” Another arm to the business is the edible flower varieties Bianca grows, and the property is also home to calves the couple rear. Helping out on the farm are six workers, It’s enough as things currently stand to grow their micro-greens; however, with an eye to the future, Scott says they are looking at diversifying.
