Initially focused on sales, the business rapidly grew to become a one-stop-shop for virtually anything related to containers. With six directors and a nationwide reach, SEA Containers NZ today specialises in selling, hiring, modifying and transporting containers throughout New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Auckland/Northland regional manager Odin Madsen and his fellow directors see SEA Containers NZ as having a strong point of difference, due to being far more responsive and hands-on for the supply of containers “than anyone else we know,” Odin says. In 2015 and 2016, SEA Containers was named in the Deloitte Fast 50 as the fastest-growing retail or consumer products business in the Central North Island and was ninth in New Zealand. The company has a wide-open market, including commercial clients, corporates, construction, retailers, industries, farmers, and for refrigeration, dangerous goods and site offices. Interestingly, about 40% of its business comprises mums and dads needing extra storage space. Unmodified 20-foot containers are available for purchase, second hand or new, for around $3000 to $5000. “These general-purpose units are manufactured with materials that withstand extreme temperatures while maintaining the container’s strength and watertightness.” “These general-purpose units are manufactured with materials that withstand extreme temperatures while maintaining the container’s strength and water-tightness. In addition, we can fit an optional lockbox on to any container for added security, and also offer a range of modifications to meet your specific container demands,” Odin says. Other options, such as container shelters with oval roofs, offer a flexible way to expand an outdoor working area or storage space. These are easy to install, as well as being relocatable for future use, and are perfect for mining, engineering, military, and industrial purposes. SEA Containers NZ’s team of 13 includes staff with the skills to design and modify containers for virtually any purpose. Shipping containers offer an incredible array of options for their use, sometimes in unique and imaginative ways. Shipping container conversions are gaining popularity as innovative solutions for temporary or permanent school environments, due to their economic and environmental benefits. They have been deployed worldwide, from remote villages to cities, offering flexibility, mobility and cost-efficiency, with options including fitting out with electricity, lighting, air- conditioning and heating, and internal fitout to specification. The complexity of SEA Containers NZ’s business, which includes 51 agencies with depots nationwide and a huge inventory along with support staff, has required a considerable investment in systems and information technology. “Anywhere that you want a container, we will generally have a depot that you can access and someone that can come and have a look at their property for site access and other factors,” Odin says. SEA Containers has been involved in supplying containers for disaster situations, such as the Christchurch earthquakes and Cyclone Gabrielle. “We did a lot of local support and didn’t necessarily charge the locals. We offered containers to help salvage their goods and that was all free,” says Odin. “We help a lot of maraes for their civil defence, because they’re becoming major hubs for the local communities, so we’re fitting out containers with shelving, batteries, lights, water for that immediate emergency response.”
