The Paparoa-based local builders are a skilled, close-knit team specialising in residential new builds, renovations, roofing, sheds, and heritage work across the Kaipara District – from Tinopai to Hukatere, Matakohe to Mangaturoto. “If someone uses us, I look after them,” says qualified builder and licensed building practitioner Adam Stevens, who founded the business in 2013. “Reputation is everything. If something’s not right, we fix it.” The company operates with a clear code: no mess, no shortcuts, and work that stands the test of time. “I’m a firm believer in doing the job properly, or not at all.” A Kaipara district local, Adam took a less than straight path into building. “I started off with a geology degree before spending six years overseas, where I picked up some building work before returning to New Zealand where I finished my apprenticeship in Blenheim, before returning home to buy 35 acres of farmland off my parents to raise my young family and kick off my own business,” he says. The company’s core team includes Adam, Mycah (his 2IC), a qualified builder who started as Adam’s apprentice in 2015, and younger apprentices Cameron and Jack. “Everyone who’s worked for me, I’ve trained,” Adam says. “I’ve probably put 12 apprentices through over the years. Teaching’s important to me. Someone taught me, so I teach someone else.” Even Pete, a seasoned 66-year-old roofer, completed a building apprenticeship under Adam. That focus on learning, consistency, and pride in workmanship runs through the company’s DNA. Adam Stevens Builders Ltd has a diverse portfolio of work, from large, new architectural family homes to modern holiday homes, modest custom cabins, and rural buildings – the team tackles all types of projects. “We’re doing a basement under a house at the moment in Pahi and another new house starting soon in Hukatere,” says Adam. “And the boys are doing a little insurance repair work, before we start on a 30sqm cabin for a client in Mangaturoto. A recent shed extension, a stylish kwila deck, and a concrete basement for a relocated home are just a few of the more recent.” Roofing is a specialty, as well. Adam estimates they have completed over 100 re-roofing jobs around the region, including for many complex or historical projects. He and his team also provide building preservation and maintenance work for Heritage New Zealand on sites like the Ruatuna property at Matakohe (birthplace of New Zealand’s 21st Prime Minister, Gordon Coates) and the North Head Lighthouse at Pouto, the entrance to the Kaipara Harbour. “We re-roofed Ruatuna a few years back,” says Adam.
