The $15 million construction of The Hive, a purpose-built facility that modernises student support services, is the school’s most significant campus redevelopment to date Located on the historic site of the school’s original health clinic and Great Oaks Farmhouse, The Hive was officially opened on January 28 with a blessing from Archbishop Sir David Moxon, and a ribbon cutting performed by Waikato Anglican College Trust Board chair Andrew Johnson, and St Paul’s Collegiate property and finance subcommittee chair Bruce Miller. Bringing a wide range of services together under one roof, it houses a comprehensive health clinic with triage areas, isolation rooms and dedicated bedrooms for unwell boarders, as well as a physiotherapy space and counselling suite. In addition to these wellbeing spaces, The Hive has a parents’ and Collegians’ lounge for families and Collegians (alumni) to connect, and an area celebrating the school’s heritage. It also accommodates the school’s reception, shop and administrative offices for the finance and marketing departments. Headmaster Ben Skeen says the building represents a shift in how the school supports its students. “This building is far more than bricks and mortar – it is our front door, our gathering place, a space designed for connection, wellbeing and belonging. The ripple effect it has on other campus redevelopment will transform how we support and educate the young people in our care.” The project extends beyond The Hive itself, with significant upgrades completed at Sargood House, one of the school’s boarding facilities. The redevelopment includes a new Year 12 dormitory, expanded common areas, refurbished ablution and locker rooms, upgraded outdoor courtyards and additional accommodation for boarding staff. The work marks the completion of a full refurbishment of all boys’ boarding houses on campus. Delivery of the project was a collaborative effort, led by Edwards White Architects and Livingstone Construction, and supported by a wide network of subcontractors.
