Delivered for the Diocese of Auckland, Tony Choi, construction manager at McMillan & Lockwood says the project showcases the company’s construction expertise, innovation and ability to manage complex builds in active public spaces. “Site access, safety and maintaining park usability throughout construction required careful planning and coordination,” he says. “Every decision had to balance efficiency, safety and quality while keeping the community experience in mind.” The single-storey facility comprises a foyer, auditorium, multipurpose hall, two lounges, offices, meeting rooms and a cafe. The main entry and the café are very public parts of the complex and frame a northoriented church yard for formal gatherings and informal recreation but also to be a crossing point for the paths through the park that are enjoyed by all park users. Tony says the vision was that St Paul’s will be an integral part of the Sir Barry Curtis Park and the café and community spaces will flow out into it without any barriers between church site and park. BSM Group Architects designed the project. “Our role was to ensure the architects’ design intent was realised on the ground while meeting the practical demands of construction and long-term use,” says Tony. “The project required early collaboration with the Diocese, architects, consultants and subcontractors to ensure both design integrity and practical constructability.” A key feature of the build was the use of precast concrete panels combined with glulam timber and structural steel. “This mix allowed us to create a structure that is both robust and inviting,” says Tony. Prefabrication of key elements reduced onsite construction time, minimised disruption and ensured high-quality finishes.” McMillan & Lockwood employed detailed sequencing, 3D modelling and rigorous quality control measures. “At McMillan & Lockwood we always try to identify solutions upfront that save time, reduce costs and improve safety on site,” says Tony.
