T T from page 26 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT James Kirkpatrick Group: Macrennie Construction - Puhinui Rd Features include solar energy generation, rainwater harvesting systems, low-carbon construction materials and infrastructure designed to accommodate low-emission vehicles “Attracting global businesses means meeting global expectations,” says James. “Sustainability is no longer optional, it is fundamental to how modern industrial developments must operate.” A centralised energy model is also being incorporated into the project, with plans for a shared solar energy bank supported by multiple battery systems. This will enable energy to be distributed across the site, balancing demand between buildings and potentially allowing the entire precinct to operate as a self-sufficient energy ecosystem. “The long-term goal is for the development to become solar powered at a precinct scale,” explains James. “We are laying the groundwork for that now, integrating the infrastructure during the early construction phases.” Significant investment has already been made in enabling works. Over the past four years, JKGL has funded millions of dollars’ worth of earthworks and essential services, including water, power, streetlighting and a 400,000-litre wastewater treatment facility. “This is private investment delivering public benefit,” says James. T Tto page 30 “We are not just building warehouses; we are building infrastructure that will support South Auckland’s growth for decades to come.” The development aligns closely with wider government and council objectives to strengthen Auckland’s economic resilience and support sustainable urban expansion. Its location near State Highway 20 and key freight corridors positions it as a gateway for goods moving between New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region. Industry observers note that Wiri is rapidly emerging as the city’s premier logistics hub, driven by its proximity to transport infrastructure and increasing demand for large-scale industrial space.
