GT Civil is positioning itself for a significant growth period, building on the strong local reputation it has gained over more than a decade working across the Bay of Plenty and Waikato, says Rowan McKeany, general manager. The company, established by directors Tim Graham and Nathan Thomas, has grown into a respected name in civil construction. “We’re very much a local Kiwi company with a big emphasis on project delivery and people,” says Rowan. “We’ve built a culture over the past 11 years, and a reputation that speaks for itself.” Recently, GT Civil has clearly defined its vision, purpose and values, adopting the mantra ‘Rise to the Challenge.’ “This is our purpose and that’s intertwined through every aspect of the business. Challenging projects is where we thrive,” says Rowan. This ethos is underpinned by four core values, Ō Matou Uara: ‘stay sharp, stay safe’ covering not just Health & Safety on-site, but physical health, mental health and the environment; ‘one waka’ emphasising teamwork; ‘dig deep’ reflecting the pride taken in the company’s work and the effort put in, and ‘finish strong’ ensuring quality and reputation endure. “These values now guide the company in decision-making, project delivery and team development,” says Rowan. As evidence of this in action, GT Civil is currently completing an 18-month project in Te Awamutu for Waipa District Council, installing bulk water mains for the town. The project runs from the Taylors Hill reservoir through the Te Awamutu central business district to Fraser Street. The work completed by GT Civil included the Churchill St roundabout, and will also cover streets in and around the town centre. As principal contractor, it is handling direct drilling, trenching, pipe installation, water connections, road closures and reinstatement. “This is a project we are really proud of as it will be transformational for the town for generations to come. The project required shift work and careful planning to minimise disruption in built-up areas,” Rowan says. GT Civil is also in the design phase of a water pump station for Bay of Plenty Regional Council by the Kaituna River. The project features a 16-metre-long, three- and-a-half-metre-diameter Archimedes screw designed to lift water while allowing local tuna (eels) and fish to pass safely. Site works were set to begin in April. In the past year, GT Civil has expanded into fuel installations for multiple petrol providers, delivering earthworks, drainage and tank installations. “This represents a new type of project for the company, and we aim to grow this line across the Bay of Plenty and Waikato,” Rowan says. GT Civil offers a wide range of services, including pipelines, pump stations, water mains, earthworks, subdivisions, retaining walls, specialist works and environmental solutions. It can install pipelines from 1m to 8m deep, handle live taps up to 200mm, and construct retaining walls of any size or type, from gabion baskets to soil-anchored structures. Operating out of offices in Cambridge and Tauranga, the company’s team, which numbers around 45, works throughout the Bay of Plenty. Rowan says that GT Civil plans to continue its investment in people, processes and client relationships. “We are seeing a growth period coming after a tough few years in the economy. With that comes new opportunities and we will focus on growth across the business, our people, new clients and new types of projects as well, without losing focus on what we do well.”
