For more than a century, RLB Packaging has been helping New Zealand businesses protect, package, and present their products safely and efficiently. The fourth-generation family business, where General Manager-Sales and Marketing Mike Button, works alongside food, beverage, and consumer goods producers across the country, offering not just packaging supplies but a full-service partnership that spans consumables, machinery, automation, and technical support. RLB Packaging has built a reputation for reliability and innovation. The business operates from its Auckland head office in Penrose, with branches in Christchurch and Nelson. It maintains its own fleet of trucks in Auckland and partners with freight providers to serve regional areas. Recent acquisitions have strengthened the company’s South Island presence. In April 2024, RLB acquired Perfect Packaging, a Christchurch-based business that added packaging machinery, automation expertise, and skilled service technicians to the team. Earlier this year, the company acquired HC Packaging to expand its physical footprint and customer base in Nelson and Blenheim. “A lot of our growth over the last ten years has been in the North Island,” Mike says. “These recent moves have allowed us to better support our South Island customers while maintaining the high standards and responsiveness our clients expect.” Mike says the family business has always had strong foundations. “The business has always been very innovative. Dad has invested heavily in intellectual property, technology, and systems. We have modernised the brand, launched a robust e-commerce platform, and improved our transport management systems. All of these things matter for a business focused on delivering practical, reliable solutions.” Automation is a key focus for RLB Packaging, particularly end-of-line packaging, which is often overlooked but can have a significant impact on throughput and labour efficiency. Mike says targeted automation improvements, such as automated wrapping or strapping, can free up staff for higher-value work while reducing material waste. “Automation is often misunderstood. For most manufacturers it’s not about removing staff, it is about removing repetitive tasks so people can focus on higher value work. Using machinery properly can also lower consumables and reduce the plastic footprint.” RLB positions itself as a packaging partner rather than a supplier. The company helps clients run more efficient production and packaging operations by combining consumables, machinery, automation, and service support. Its nationwide team of service technicians manages commissioning, operator training, preventative maintenance, and breakdown response, one of the largest inhouse service operations in New Zealand. Many packaging suppliers sell either consumables or machinery. RLB combines packaging materials, automation systems, and nationwide technical support. “This approach allows us to support our customers’ operations more deeply, and helps them improve performance and efficiency.” The company also actively brings innovation to New Zealand. Mike says international exhibitions, such as Interpack in Germany, provide valuable insights into emerging packaging technologies. “We focus on innovations that are practical for New Zealand businesses. Bringing these technologies here helps our customers remain competitive globally.” RLB has strong partnerships with brands such as Robopac, Titan, and Ranpak to provide proven solutions. Despite the challenges of global supply chains and labour shortages, Mike is confident in the future. “New Zealand businesses are incredibly capable and resilient. Packaging is an essential part of protecting product quality and ensuring goods move efficiently. There is strong demand for solutions that improve productivity and reliability, and we are committed to providing them.” RLB Packaging traces its roots to 1920 and founder Robert Lorimer Button, and today it continues to support New Zealand businesses with practical packaging solutions, advanced technology, and expert service.
