Gardens4U T T Sue Russell Specialised work boosts company’s growth T T Kelly Deeks Jayden Robinson’s background has always been in landscaping and he quickly established himself after leaving school, taking on a team to work with before heading overseas. Today his business, Gardens4U, established nearly four years ago, is based in Central Auckland. “I very quickly worked my way up after dropping out of school at 16. I was very motivated and by the time I was 18, I was managing a team. I had always held aspirations to be my own boss and I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in some wonderful projects,” Jayden says. He gained his qualifications through Unitec, learning part-time as he worked. When the industry acknowledged his capabilities, having won a few awards, Jayden was tapped on the shoulder by leading Project Delivery company, Stellar Projects. “I’ve been fortunate to have learnt with the best and experienced being involved across a number of industry sectors with the projects we took on and that set me up well to establish Gardens4U.” The company takes care of complete delivery of projects with Jayden concentrating on the design aspect. AK Electrical is lighting the way across Auckland’s electrical sector combining specialist expertise, energy efficiency and longstanding partnerships working for major facility-management providers. Director Bobby Elliott says the business has evolved steadily over the past decade, expanding from a two-man operation into a 12-strong team delivering residential, commercial, and council-based electrical services across the region. “A big part of our work starts with our auditing service for commercial buildings,” he says. “We assess sites, present a full picture to the client, and then help them to prioritise what needs to be done now, in the near future, and longer term.” That structured approach has become a key point of difference, giving clients clarity and control over their electrical assets, while creating a consistent pipeline of work. “It helps clients make informed decisions. They can stage the work in a way that suits their budget, and we can support them through that entire process,” Bobby says. AK Electrical’s capability extends well beyond standard installations and maintenance. The company undertakes specialised work for Auckland Council, including the relocation of lighting towers across sports fields throughout the year. “Twice a year we move lighting towers across about 30 parks,” Bobby says. “They have winter and summer positions, depending on the sport being played, so we work within a two-week window either side of the changeover. It’s only a month of work each year, but it is highly specialised and has become a core part of what we do.” The work requires custom equipment, including a purpose-built hiab truck and engineered cradles designed specifically for transporting the towers safely and efficiently. The business itself has grown significantly since Bobby purchased it from his father 10 years ago. “I’m able to let loose on my creative side but I’m very practical in my approach. Designs have to work from a build-ability perspective and I find it such a privilege to turn my clients’ dreams into reality.” Jayden says the design process begins with a good long conversation with clients, asking them what they imagine the space could be. He then takes this thinking, overlaying it with his own perspectives and skills, to create preliminary designs from which the final design is honed. “While we’re predominantly residential we certainly have the capacity and capability to do commercial work. We also work closely with developers, which involves a broad array of landscaping form work, so there’s plenty of variety.” A particular passion and specialty is in the design for water sensitive areas and construction of swales. These are specially designed channels, shallow, broad and vegetated in nature designed to store or convey runoff and remove pollutants. Swales can also be a structure that conveys runoff to the next place along a treatment process. Gardens 4U works across an extensive footprint all over Auckland and beyond, including Karaka, Waiuku and right up to Mangawhai. “When I took over, it was just me and an apprentice. I could see there was an opportunity to expand by supporting larger organisations and taking on more specialised work, so I pushed into that space.” That strategy has seen the company develop strong working relationships with major contractors and facility-management providers, including Ventia, Citycare and other large-scale operators. Rather than competing directly, AK Electrical positions itself as a trusted support partner. “We work alongside their project managers and facility managers, supporting them wherever they need,” Bobby says. “It is about building trust. We are there to help deliver their projects and step in on the more complex or challenging aspects.” This collaborative approach has opened the door to a diverse range of projects, while reinforcing the company’s reputation for reliability and technical capability. Looking ahead, AK Electrical is preparing for further change as demand for renewableenergy solutions continues to grow. AK Electrical director Bobby Elliott.
