MARINE Pacific 7 Always keen on an interesting design and build project, Hawes Building Solutions welcomed the opportunity to build Pacific 7’s new boatbuilding facility at Sulphur Point Marine Precinct in Tauranga. The project started on August 3, and it’s on track for delivery in January. Pacific 7 first contacted XL Structural, a division of Alpine Buildings NZ. From their base in Timaru, they design commercial and industrial structural steel buildings for clients New Zealand-wide. For this project, they needed a local partner who could take the design further and make it a reality. They found it in Hawes Building Solutions. “We researched several construction companies in the Tauranga area, and Hawes came recommended by others in the industry. We felt they had a good depth of experience for this project,” explains Almanzo Boakes from XL Structural. Hawes were signed up as the head contractor and engaged all consultants and contractors under their umbrella. Celebrating 20 years in business, Hawes is a trusted name in the Bay of Plenty. Their reputation for quality workmanship and service is growing. Mark Hawes started the business in 2000, and his brother Anthony joined a few years later. Since then, they’ve worked on many interesting design and build projects, both residential and commercial. Build with confidence Let’s build your dream together. From the first call and onsite meeting, this team grabbed the project with both hands and made it happen,” Almanzo says. “We like that it’s a family business, and that Mark and Anthony have many years of onsite experience. They are involved in the project at a practical level.” All designs were approved and lodged for building consent, and with the extended steel structure designed and engineered by XL Structural, Hawes continued with their inhouse architect to work on the layout for the office and the rest of the building. “A team of 10 is onsite most days, and the structural steel is now complete. The roof will go on this week and we’re working on the timber framework for the offices, lunchroom, and bathrooms,” Mark says. He explains that this build has unique requirements, as it’s situated right on the water’s edge. They had to work around flood zones, and the possibility of rising sea levels and 1/100-year flood events. Pacific 7’s director Sean Kelly’s favourite feature of the new premises is the steel that’s been cast-in to the concrete floor, which makes welding jigs so much easier. He says “the Hawes team are good blokes and they’re easy to work with. They turn up to work early, put in good long hard days, and they work fast. I really appreciate that.”
