BUILDING Gartshore G artshore has won the Craftsmanship Excellence Award for the second year running at the New Zealand Retail Interiors Association RED Awards. The project that won in 2020 was Reign & Pour Commercial Bay. Gartshore also won the Food + Beverage Merit Award for its work on IPPUDO at West- field Newmarket. Gartshore managing director Rob Gartshore says that the wins signify the high levels of craftsmanship and excellence that the compa- ny is consistently achieving on projects. “The GDM Craftsmanship Excellence Award recognises the quality of our workmanship and as a joiner/shopfitter it is one we strive to win. “No company has won this award two years in a row. It’s a reflection on the quality of our work where we have maintained a high stand- ard for a number of years, so much so that it has been recognised by a national body. “Without the hard work and dedication of all our staff these awards would simply not have been achieved and it is something we are all immensely proud of,” he says. Designed by Mitchell Addison Architects, the Reign & Pour décor involved Gartshore completing an entire fitout from a base shell. Working with an existing building, Gartshore has to ensure the interior design complemented building elements such as concrete columns and exposed cables, which formed part of the design. Rob says the level of design was high class and included decorative glass, leather and vel- vet upholstery, marble stonework and fluted timber and veneers. Covid-19 threw a spanner in the works when the lockdown occurred just as the project was nearing completion. The IPPUDO project marked the brand’s entry to the New Zealand market and as such was a flagship store, says Rob. Designed by Izzard, the fitout featured bespoke, distinct elements including a feature wall with over 1200 individually mounted ramen spoons and another feature wall where ramen bowls had been used decoratively to form an eye catching design. The project once again demonstrated the high levels of craftsmanship and skill the Gartshore team offer, with many elements made at the company’s Tauranga factory, says Rob. Gartshore boasts a long history. The company was started by Rob’s grandfather Bill Senior and for 65 years has continually reinvested profits back into the business to offer the most up-to-date technology, plant and staff training. Rob says that this policy of investment for more than half a century, along with accom- modating as many of the trade functions “It’s a reflection on the quality of our work where we have maintained a high standard for a number of years, so much so that it has been recognised by a national body.” in-house, has ensured Gartshore is continually well placed to meet the needs of the construc- tion industry. “While most other companies rely on outside organisations, suppliers and contractors, thereby losing a crucial element of control, Gartshore instead invested in its own resources,” says Rob. Recently completed projects include the 300-room Horizon Hotel in Queen Street for SkyCity and Naumi Hotel in Wellington. Currently underway is 308 apartments in Remuera, and a luxury apartment complex in Tauranga’s CBD called Luxridge.
