And for the client it perhaps reaffirms their choice of us as their builder.” Ollie emphasises that the award is as much recognition of the efforts and abilities of his subcontractors as it is of Oliver Tuck Construc- tion. “Building stunning homes like these is always an incredible team collaboration and something we can all be proud of.” Located between Waipu Cove and Langs, the home Ollie and his team spent the best part of two years constructing, crafting and detailing the home which sits high above the ocean, commanding breathtaking panoramic views of islands, bays and the sea. During construction orcas and dolphins were frequently seen in the shallows and Ollie reckons a man with a good arm could have tossed an orange to feed them. The project involved cutting an existing building in half, disconnecting the bedroom wing while demolishing and removing the remaining building. The bedroom wing was gutted and com- pletely renovated and the rest of the house rebuilt and extended so the home now encompasses 441sqm, excluding a swimming pool area. Designed by Auckland practice, Studio John Irving Architects, elegance and simplicity was a key requirement, which Ollie says belies the complexity of the build. “With these sorts of builds, pre-visualising and mentally projecting forward to ensure everything finishes up in the right place is crit- ical to the quality of the finished product. We really look at where the lines are going to end up, what the finishing materials are and how they are going to interact with each other. “That is probably what we as a team bring to the piece. We were certainly involved with the construction methodology and collaborat- ing with all the designers including landscape, interior design, engineers and architect.” Built across several different levels the home is essentially married into the hillside, recessed into the bank to help it blend with the natural environment, ensuring the house didn’t stand out from the coastline. “That was a big drive by both client and architect. It’s a beautiful home but the clients didn’t want the Californian style mansion. They wanted nice contemporary New Zealand Architecture, befitting of the landscape.” Sitting above the bedroom wing is the kitch- en, living, dining and media rooms, the garage above that, and the master suite at the upper most level. “The master bedroom really is sensational but overall the home is pretty amazing the way each room integrates into each other. Each bedroom has its own ocean view line.” The dining area opens onto the deck facing the ocean, so meals can be enjoyed in the stunning oceanic setting. A covered living area provides summer shade and a fireplace, all in close proximity to the pool. A waterfall deck merges into the landscape giving a sense of being part of the landscape perched above the cliffs.
